- Tokelau wants to remain part of New Zealand

The unoffocial flag of Tokelau.
The people of Tokelau have told a United Nations Decolonization mission that they "prefer to remain part of New Zealand."

This was relayed in a media briefing in neighboring Apia, Samoa, after the assessment mission spent two weeks visiting Tokelau's three atolls.

Benefits Tokelauans say they are getting through New Zealand include automatic New Zealand citizenship, including access to education, health and other benefits.

The assessment team's objective was to examine the situation in Tokelau within the framework of a work program towards self-determination.
