- Chinese ambassador puts pressure on Papua New Guinea

Cabinet ministers in PNG Prime Minister Michael Somare's government have defied Chinese demands they boycott Taiwan National Day celebrations in Port Moresby.

The AFP news agency says Sir Michael stayed away from the event at the Taiwan trade office, but his press secretary and three cabinet ministers attended.

The attendances came despite Papua New Guinea's formal recognition of China's sovereignty over Taiwan.

Earlier this week the Chinese Ambassador wrote to the PNG prime minister, asking Sir Michael to ensure that no ministers or officials attended the Taiwanese reception.
