Quilt

My life is wrapped in a needlework treasure,
Snippets of other's lives woven together
Odds and ends from those who know me best.
Lovingly unfurled from a memory-lined cedar chest,
A tapestry-like wall hanging,
a fabric photo in that way,
A country sampler stitched together
with cotton thread and bygone days.
Remnants that have been tucked away
on shelves behind closet doors,
And others that have been pulled out of overstuffed
chests of drawers.
Some are finished, some are not,
and some may never be,
And tho some just don't seem to fit,
they measure up for me.
Combinations unconsidered before,
a ½ yard piece of rust
Sewn with ordinary basting thread
and sprinkled with gold dust.
Contrasting squares and corners
all pressed and pieced,
Blocks and borders, and seams
all lovingly creased.
Some of the stitching doesn't match;
the corners aren't always square,
But minor imperfections are the consolation that we share.
Folded gracefully into the waft of this simple
patchwork cover
Are gently offered life lessons, one after the other.
Parcels and passages from my life, a living history...
Fondly spread-out across the years
that have been and are yet to be.
