Chasms

You answer with a halfhearted, "I see."
And I know you aren't really listening to me.
You nod and adjust your glasses in weary measure
While I imagine pirate ships and buried treasure.
You ponder important papers
inside a leather briefcase
While I daydream of homeruns
and stealing third base.
You merely answer, "Not now"
when I want you to play.
I just smile, shove my hands in my pockets and say
"That's ok"
…then undauntedly skip away.
