Owen(s) Surname

The surname Owen is Welsh in origin. In Welsh and old Irish records, it appears that the name was also spelled Owain. According to one source, the word Owen is not Welsh at all and a version of the Greek word "eugene" meaning "well born." The origin or correct spelling of the name in this line is "Owen" but many descendants have used "Owens" as the official spelling.

There are conflicting sources as to his origin, that he may have been born as early as 1622. John came to the English colonies as a young man and settled in Connecticut by the 1640's. 6th Generation:

Amherst Phelps Owen(s) was born on May 22, 1802 in Cannonsville, Delaware County, New York 4,5,6. He died on June 23, 1869 5,6 perhaps in Cannonsville, Delaware Co., New York. He is buried in the Walton Cemetery, Walton, Delaware Co., New York.

Father: John Owen
Mother: Olive Kilburn

Amherst spent most of his life in the vicinity of Cannonsville, New York. During his youth, his parents owned land just outside of Cannonsville; between the Delaware River and Trout Creek. He was married in about 1821 to Charlotte Huyck, whose family lived farther up Trout Creek. Together they raised a family of nine children. Throughout his life, Amherst's last name was spelled as both "Owens" and "Owen". However his children all consistently adopted the "Owens" spelling.

Amherst was a farmer and "lumberman" (inference from other clues is that this probably means that he operated saw mills). It is a guess that he might have also worked as a blacksmith (only because three of his sons were blacksmiths). Between the 1820s and the late 1840s, he lived with his family in the town of Tompkins, in Delaware County, New York. It is not clear where they lived in the town, as they moved frequently, but they were somewhere in the vicinity of Cannonsville. After comparing land records and maps with the adjacent households in the 1830 and 1840 census enumerations, my best guess is that they were usually living in a rural area along Johnny Brook, north of Cannonsville and east of Barbourville (the same location where Amherst sold land in 1848, see below). Between 1833 and 1837, Amherst owned 72 acres of farmland in the far northwest corner of the neighboring town of Walton (the land was in a rural area, about halfway between the villages of Trout Creek and Northfield; along Loomis Brook Road). It is unclear if they ever lived there (but they probably did not, because he was described as a resident of Tompkins in those deeds). In 1842, Amherst was taxed with an "E. Boyd" (most likely Elisha Boyd who lived along Johnny Brook. He was a farmer, but an 1856 map shows a saw mill adjacent to his property). In 1848, Amherst sold 5 acres of land in Tompkins that was north of Cannonsville and east of Barbourville (see above). This property had been sold to him by Young Stafford at an unknown point before 1847 (the deed was apparently not recorded or indexed). At about that time, Amherst and his family briefly moved away from New York. In September 1850, they were living in nearby Wayne County, Pennsylvania. They were probably still there in 1855, when they are absent from the 1855 New York state census.

Sometime between 1855 and 1860, they returned to Delaware County, New York. In 1860 they were living in the town of Tompkins. There, they were likely just east of the village of Deposit, at the community called Stilesville (in what is now the town of Deposit). In 1865, they were still in Tompkins, but were probably in or just outside of the village of Cannonsville. Then in the 1869 county atlas, an "A.P. Owen" was found several miles east of Cannonsville, between the communities of Granton and Rock Rift. This agrees with one record which suggests that his daughter Olive spent part of her youth in the vicinity of Granton.

During the 1830s, Amherst was a major in the New York National Guard (i.e. militia). As a result, he was known as Major Owen/Owens for much of his adult life.

Amherst married Charlotte Huyck circa 1821 in Cannonsville, Delaware Co., New York.

They had the following children:

1 Amherst Phelps Owen was born on or about on November 2, 1823 in Cannonsville, Delaware Co., New York 6. He died on August 12, 1832 in Cannonsville, Delaware Co., New York 6. He is buried in the Walton Cemetery, Walton, Delaware Co., New York.
Considering the almost exact birth dates, Amherst and George were probably twins.
2 George Webster Owens was born on November 12, 1823 in Cannonsville, Delaware Co., New York 15. He died sometime between 1880 and 1885, probably in New York or Iowa.
He married Mary Ann Burrows sometime between 1850 and 1853. (She was born circa 1836 in New York 8 and died on December 24, 1890 in Salt Lake City, Salt Lake Co., Utah.)
They had the following children:
Isaac N. Owens (c. 1853-aft. 1882)
Medora Owens (c. 1855-1860s)
George Curtis Owens (1855-1919)
Louis Kilbourn Owens (1857-1936)
md. Mary D. Benson
Abram George Owens (1860-1949)
md. Grace May Owen
Harriet "Hattie" Owens (1864-1870s)

In adulthood, George worked as a farmer, a butcher and a lumberman. He enlisted in 1864 during the Civil War, but was discharged by court martial because of "contempt of military discipline". After marriage, he and his family apparently moved frequently. They lived in Bucks Co., Pennsylvania; Delaware Co., New York; and Sullivan Co., New York; and then sometime between 1880 and 1882 the family moved out west to Dallas Co., Iowa. It is not clear if George died before, or after, the family moved to Iowa. His surviving children spread further and moved to Colorado, Washington and Illinois.

Note that the Owen family history book 4 contains various errors about this family. His middle name was Webster, not Washington. His wife's name was Mary Ann, not Betsy. And the book also records that they had a daughter named Georgina who died at the age of 16 - but that is not corroborated by any evidence.

3 Joanna Adelia Owens was born on February 22, 1826 in Cannonsville, Delaware Co., New York 4,21. She died on August 1, 1917 in Brooklyn, Kings Co., New York 16,21. She is buried in the Riverview Cemetery, Hancock, Delaware Co., New York.
She married James Nelson Crawford circa 1846 in Tompkins, Delaware Co., New York. (He was born circa 1813 in New York 8 and died in 1883 in Tompkins, Delaware Co., New York. He is buried in the Riverview Cemetery, Hancock, Delaware Co., New York.)
They had the following children:
Beulah Crawford (c. 1846-1850's)
Anna Louise Crawford (1847-1915)
Andrew Murray Crawford (1853-1925)
md. Florence Irene Watson
Helen "Nellie" Jane Crawford (1853-1897)
md. Jonas Parks Frazier
Frances Gertrude Crawford (1855-1943)
md. 1st. Charles E. Van Orsdale
md. 2nd. George W. Boothe
Agnes Eugenia Crawford (1858-1937)
md. Oscar Christian
James Nelson Crawford (1860-1922)
md. Mary M. Hall
Adaline "Addie" Owens Crawford (1865-1955)
md. 1st. John Morrison
md. 2nd. Irving Gillespie
Carrie May Crawford (1868-1893)
md. Charles Almiron Wheat

Joanna lived with her husband and children in the town of Tompkins, Delaware County, New York, for many years after their marriage. They were on the north side of the west branch of the Delaware River, about halfway between Deposit and Cannonsville. In 1883, she moved to the nearby village of Sidney Centre in the town of Sidney in Delaware County, New York, where she remained for many years. In old age, Joanna lived with her unmarried daughter Anna. After Anna died in 1915, Joanna moved to Brooklyn in New York City, where she lived with her daughter Addie. She died there in 1917 at the age of 91.

Walton Reporter, Aug. 11, 1917, Pg. 6:
"Mrs. Nelson Crawford. (From Sidney Center correspondent.)
Mrs. Johanna Crawford, widow of Nelson Crawford, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. John Morrison in Brooklyn on Wednesday, Aug. 1. The body was brought to Sidney Center, and the funeral services were held on Friday morning from the Baptist church, the Rev. V. G. Shaffer officiating. Burial in the family plot in Cannonsville.
Mrs. Crawford had a long and interesting life. She was born when John Quincy Adams was president and had she lived until the 22nd of next February she would have been ninety-two years old. The Crawford family moved from Cannonsville to Sidney Center about forty years ago and they lived here until last fall when Mrs. Crawford went to Brooklyn to live with her daughter. Mrs. Crawford had belonged to the Baptist church from early girlhood. She was a woman of strong character and was highly respected and loved by all. She is survived by three daughters and two sons: Mrs. Morrison of Brooklyn, Mrs. George Booth of Sidney, Mrs. Oscar Christian of Ramsey, N. J., Nelson Crawford of Westport, Conn., and the Hon. Murray Crawford of Portland, Oregon."

4 Orange M. Owens was born on March 8, 1828 in Cannonsville, Delaware Co., New York 17,22. He died on April 15, 1903 in Burlington Township, Burlington Co., New Jersey 17.
He married Hannah Myers, widow of James P. Hough, in 1872 in Bucks Co., Pennsylvania. (She was born circa 1833 in Pennsylvania 8 and died sometime between 1880 and 1900 in Bucks Co., Pennsylvania.)
They had no children, but he had one step-daughter, Lillie M. Hough Haldeman.

Orange moved with his family to Wayne County, Pennsylvania during the 1840s. When they returned to New York during the 1850s, he apparently remained in Pennsylvania. He served in the Civil War out of Pennsylvania. He settled in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, where he worked as a farmer. He first applied for a Civil War pension in 1891. In about 1897, he moved to Burlington, New Jersey where he entered the Masonic Home, and died there in 1903.

The Walton Reporter, Apr. 25, 1903, Pg. 4:
"Orange Owens died at the Masonic Home at Burlington, N. J., April 18, aged 75 years. He was a brother of Mrs. A. Winters and has many other relatives here."
