Allen Surname

The surname Allen is said to have been Scottish in origin, from the word "aluinn" meaning fair or handsome. Earliest reference to our branch of this family refers to them as Irish, which may be an indication that they were Scotch-Irish (Scottish people who were invited by the government to settle on confiscated Irish lands).


1st Generation:

William Allen was born circa 1750 in Ireland. He died after June 16, 1807 in Nicholas County, Kentucky.
William and his family first lived in Pennsylvania before settling Nicholas County, Kentucky in about the late 1780's. It is not clear whether he was the William Allen who was enumerated in 1810 in Nicholas County.

William married Margaret circa 1775 in Pennsylvania. She was born circa 1755 in Pennsylvania. She died after 1810 in Nicholas County, Kentucky.

They had the following children:

2 Ann Allen was born circa 1780 in Pennsylvania. She died after 1850 in Wishawaka, Saint Joseph County, Indiana.
She married Peter Fleming Ireland on September 28, 1804 in Nicholas County, Kentucky 1. (He was born on April 8, 1785 8 and died on October 5, 1821 in Jefferson Twp., Preble Co., Ohio 8.)

4 Eleanor Allen was born on June 15, 1784 in Pennsylvania 2. She died on September 26, 1842 in Center Twp., Boone Co., Indiana 2. She is buried in the Beck Cemetery, Center Twp., Boone Co., Indiana.
She married Robert Brenton on September 12, 1811 in Nicholas Co., Kentucky. (He was born on January 1 8 or 4 2, 1785 in Washington Co., Pennsylvania and died on May 22, 1863 in Boone Co., Indiana 2. He is buried in the Beck Cemetery, Center Twp., Boone Co., Indiana.)

Dorothy Allen was born on December 27, 1776 7 in Pennsylvania. She died on December 2, 1851 7 in Jefferson Twp., Boone Co., Indiana. She is buried in the Cox Cemetery, Jefferson Twp., Boone Co., Indiana.

Mother: Margaret

Dorothy moved with her family from Pennsylvania to Kentucky in the late 1780s, when she was probably verging on adolescence. They lived in a part of Bourbon Co., Kentucky that became Nicholas County in 1799. In about 1833, Dorothy moved with her family to Boone Co., Indiana, where they settled on a farm in Jefferson Township.

Dorothy married John Hill on December 26, 1796 in Bourbon (now Nicholas) Co., Kentucky.
