Te Arohanui Maori Culture Club (Inc.)

Welcome to Western Australia's longest running Incorporated Maori Culture Group

Our Kapa Haka Group

Started in July 1977, Te Arohanui Maori Culture Club has been running strong for many years. Currently consisting of approximately 15 performing members. Our group performs in and around the Perth metro area, performing for birthdays, weddings, and a range of other events.

About Us

Te Arohanui Maori Club was started in a suburban parking lot in Perth by a group of people hungry for learning and not wanting their children to lose their heritage. We are a non-profit organisation with the aim to one day be part of or establish a cultural community centre. Keeping our culture alive for our children and our children's children is a vital part of Te Arohanui and to keep the learning apart of our everyday lives will keep Te Arohanui alive. Our group consists of people from all parts of New Zealand and the world. We are not restricted to certain "Tribes". We welcome all with open arms.

My name is Rosemary Baird and I am a History PhD student at the University of Canterbury, supervised by Prof Philippa Mein Smith and Dr Lyndon Fraser. My thesis aims to investigate the experiences of New Zealand migrants and return migrants who moved to and from Australia during the late 1960s to the early 1990s through their own life stories. I want to highlight the experiences of real people rather than just focusing on statistics. To do this project I need volunteers who are willing to tell me their stories, either in written or oral form. At the moment I’m finding I have a particular need for more Maori participants. I know that the process of filling out a survey can be a hassle but this can be a great opportunity to write down your story for whanau and grandchildren. Is there any way that you could help me please by passing on my request to any Maori in Australia you know or printing the below paragraph in any emails or newsletters you put out? Did you migrate from New Zealand to Australia in the period from the late 1960s to early 1990s? I am researching a history PhD at Canterbury University on this topic and need volunteers who are willing to share their migration stories. I would like to look at the experiences both of Kiwis who stayed in Australia and also of those who returned to New Zealand. Please email Rosemary Baird at kiwisinaustralia@gmail.com if you would be able to help. This project has been approved by the University of Canterbury Human Ethics Committee. Yours sincerely, Rosemary Baird

Once again, Thank you all.
