Generation No. 3

4.  ELIZABETH ADELINE4 PATTERSON (WILLIAM T.3, WILLIAM2, WILLIAM1 PATERSON) was born 1854 in Lawrence, Washington, OH, and died WFT Est. 1910-1949.  She married (2) JAMES HALL September 18, 1881 in Liberty, Washington, OH.  He was born March 14, 1832, and died WFT Est. 1884-1924.  She married (3) ROBERT MARKLE April 24, 1906.  He was born WFT Est. 1841-1886, and died WFT Est. 1909-1970.

Notes for ELIZABETH ADELINE PATTERSON:

Marie Hall Purdy recalls that Adeline was "an

outgoing, sweet, lovely person. She was

nice to the grandchildren. She was a widow, as I recall, then. She

married a man a long walking distance from us. My father would drive

there in a carriage, a buggy with one horse. We could walk across the

hillside and down to Fifteen Creek. I remember walking there, through

the woods. Adeline was nice and would have something good for us to

eat."  Marie remembers that the Pattersons were well known in the

community. Adeline's siblings were William, 1855, Lois, 1861, and Swan, 1864.

When James Hall died, Adaline had 80 acres of land in Lawrence Twp. valued at

$1,100...she got a government pension since James Hall was in Civil War.

Adeline died when Marie was young.

Child of ELIZABETH ADELINE PATTERSON is:

5.                i.    JOHN LEE5 HALL, b. May 12, 1875, Washington, OH; d. February 09, 1972, Baltimore, MD.

Generation No. 4

5.  JOHN LEE5 HALL (ELIZABETH ADELINE4 PATTERSON, WILLIAM T.3, WILLIAM2, WILLIAM1 PATERSON) was born May 12, 1875 in Washington, OH, and died February 09, 1972 in Baltimore, MD.  He married (1) BESSIE MAYBELLE GRAHAM June 03, 1900 in Flint Mills, Washington, OH, daughter of ALFRED GRAHAM and EUNICE ADAMSON.  She was born May 04, 1880 in Washington, OH, and died August 03, 1923 in Washington, OH.  He married (2) MARY ELLEN INGRAHAM WOOD July 15, 1938 in Marietta, Washington, OH.  She was born WFT Est. 1873-1920, and died February 22, 1967.

Notes for JOHN LEE HALL:

Marie Hall recalls her father, a teacher, taking her to visit his school one day

when she was very young. "Mother fixed me up in

a clean dress, and made sure I had mittens.  It was an exciting trip. All the

girls wanted me to sit with them." Although a teacher, John

still raised crops.

"Father would work before school in the morning, and after

school he fed and milked the cows in the barn. The acreage Father

owned had previously been three other farms. Father would buy land. His

teaching income was small, but income from oil wells helped. All of the

families in the area had some oil income. They had small wells on their

property. My brother said he thought that 21 wells had been drilled in our

area. A farmer needed something besides what he earned from growing crops.

Father was ambitious;

he prepared himself for teaching, which at that time was unusual. He attended a

normal school. He was interested in poetry and music. He wrote some poems,

and we children saved some of them. He enjoyed listening to music, and he had

beautiful penmanship. My father had a slew of step brothers and step sisters

and they got along well. He married again several years after mother died, to

a woman named Ellen Wood. We would take a carriage to see the Halls, Father's

step father. I can remember going there, and he had quite a family."

John Lee Hall's father is unknown.

James Hall adopted him upon marrying John's mother, and John took the Hall

surname. Patsy Brown says his step father James Hall was a Civil War

veteran. Also that John first taught at

Bloomfield, in Washington Co.

He taught for 42 years. He bought his mother's farm, the

Metts farm, when she married Robert Markle. Bessie and John Hall had 10

children. Marie says the first son died shortly after childbirth. John built

a home at 217 Kenwood St., Marietta OH.

He wrote a book, "Country Tales for City Boys."

He is buried in Valley Cemetery, Marietta.

Notes for BESSIE MAYBELLE GRAHAM:

Marie Hall Purdy remembers her mother, Bessie, as a very devoted person. The

Graham

family were religious, and attended the Muskingum Valley

Baptist Church. Marie remembers visiting her mother's brothers Eber and Willie

and Maurice, and their sister Anna. Bessie was kept busy working with family

responsibilities and didn't have time for hobbies. Marie remembers her busy in

the kitchen, and as a good cook. Bessie enjoyed visiting her family and going to

church. She was interested in her children's development and education.

Bessie died in 1923, just abut the time Marie met Russell. Marie was

attending a Methodist institution that trained people for denominational

careers. Her mother apparently died of stomach cancer, just as Marie had

finished her first year at the school.

Patsy Brown says Bessie met John Hall when he was her teacher and he

roomed at the Graham house.

Notes for FRANCIS RUSSELL PURDY:

Harold remembers Russell in childhood painting with watercolors. "Russell had no

training, but was good. He might have gotten serious about painting but became

engrossed in the ministry and with his family."  Harold says that Russell always

seemed to feel he was called to the ministry

from the time he made a profession of faith at about age 12. He talked about it

from then on. Even before that, he would get Kenneth and Lorraine and Harold to

sit and listen to hik preach. He'd set up a little pulpit and call hymns and

preach to them. Russell's father Earle was active in the church and pastors

would stay at their home and eat with the family and visit them a lot.

Harold says Russell was a big incluence on him and that Harold never wanted to

do anything but be a minister also.

Marie Hall met Russell shortly after her mother's death. She was attending the

family church, the Lawrence Baptist Church, and one day she saw a young man

teaching the men's group. "There he was, this young man, and I thought, 'Oh my,

a young man.' After a while Russell knew I had been trying to train for

missionary work or some kind of Christian work, and I think that made an

impression on him.  He was only about 20 years old. We got acquainted and he

took me to a meeting or two, and we started dating."

Notes for WILLIAM PATTERSON:

Six miles west of Davidson, NC lived another family associated with the Bethel Presbyterian Church.  This was the family of William Patterson, who owned 38 slaves in 1860.  The Pattersons moved to upper Mecklenburg from Providence Community.  According to records preserved by Miss Lenora Patterson of Davidson, William Patterson moved to his new home in this section in 1829.  It was the typical two-story weatherboard house, with two large end-chimneys, a one-story porch, and the usual outbuildings. This house burned in the 1930's.  No name for this plantation is recollected by descendants today.  None of the sons of this family attended Davidson College in the days before the war, but the name of the owner is perpetuated on the present faculty in his great-grandson William Patterson Cumming.  Dr. Cumming's own grandfather (son of William) lived in a much more elaborate house.  His father purchased for him in the 1850's the handsome brick dwelling built by the Reverend John Williamson of Hopewell Church.  The Rev. Williamson had been planter ans slave owner as well as preacher and teacher.  His brother, Samuel, was the second president of Davidson [College].  If all the Patterson girls had the verve of Miss 'Nita (the widow Caldwell), the big brick house must have been a very lively household.  When in her seventies, Miss 'Nita could out square-dance most of her acquaintances half her age.
