Venturi and Thompson Complete President's Cup Teams with Wild Card Picks

PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Florida (Ticker) -- United States captain Ken Venturi today selected Loren Roberts and Paul Azinger to complete his team for the upcoming Presidents Cup.

Tiger Woods is atop the list of 10 players who automatically qualified for the American squad that will try to reclaim the international match-play trophy in October. He joined the legendary Ben Hogan as the only golfers to win three majors in a year with a playoff win Sunday over Bob May in the PGA Championship.

Points determined the top 10 spots for the U.S. and International squads. American players were selected based on prize money accumulated from the start of the 1999 season through the PGA Championship. Money from the 2000 season was doubled, giving Woods a staggering 20,002,228 points atop the list of Americans.

Ernie Els of South Africa, who was second in the first three major tournaments before finishing 35th on Sunday, is the top player on the international squad.

Captain Peter Thomson of the Internationals chose Australians Robert Allenby and Steve Elkington today to complete his 12-man team for the fourth playing of the biennial team match-play competition.

Joining Woods on the American squad are Phil Mickelson, Hal Sutton, David Duval, Davis Love III, Tom Lehman, Jim Furyk, Notah Begay III, Kirk Triplett and Stewart Cink.

Cink's closing 67 on Sunday moved him into a tie for 10th and gave him $77,500. That translated to 155,000 points and allowed him to overtake Roberts for the final automatic spot. It did not end up hurting Roberts, who played in one previous Presidents Cup in 1994.

Azinger was 24th in the U.S. standings. He will be making his first appearance as a player after serving as an assistant to captain Hale Irwin in 1994.

Joining Els on the Internationals are Vijay Singh of Fiji, Nick Price of Zimbabwe, Carlos Franco of Paraguay, Stuart Appleby of Australia, Michael Campbell of New Zealand, Mike Weir of Canada, Shigeki Maruyama of Japan, Greg Norman of Australia and Retief Goosen of South Africa.

Internationals were selected based on their world rankings after all events completed on Sunday. The team consists of non-Europeans who are ineligible to play in the more prestigious Ryder Cup.

Allenby, who finished 11th in the International standings, will be making his fourth appearance in the Presidents Cup. Elkington, who was ranked 17th, will be competing for a third time.

The U.S. will try to avenge a 20 1/2-11 1/2 loss in the 1998 event at the Royal Melbourne Golf Club in Victoria, Australia.

This year's team match-play tourney will be at Robert Trent Jones Golf Club in Lake Manassas, Virginia, the site of the first two competitions in 1994 and 1996.

The U.S. won those events with Fred Couples providing the clinching point in both of the closely contested matches. Couples could be one of the captain's selections by Venturi.

President Bill Clinton will serve as honorary chairman of the Presidents Cup. He attended the 1996 event and close friend and golfing partner Vernon Jordan is president of the club.
