SSH 6B was added to the state highway system in 1937. This route began at Jct PSH 6 (later SR 31, now SR 20) at Usk and headed south past Sacheen Lake, ending at Jct PSH 6 (then US 195, now US 2) southwest of Newport. When the state highway system was renumbered, SSH 6B became SR 311.
