When first posted as such in January 1964, SR 162 began in Downtown Puyallup and headed east on Pioneer Ave. East of Puyallup and south of Sumner, Pioneer Ave, intersects with Valley Ave and turns right towards Orting. SR 162 continued along Pioneer to Orting and South Prairie, ending at Jct SR 165 south of Buckley. In the early 1970s, the SR 161/512 freeway was built to the east of Downtown Puyallup.
