The Bon Marche

Downtown Seattle

The Seattle based Bon Marche department store was founded in 1890. The Seattle company was named after but was not related to the Paris department store of the same name. The present downtown store, opened in 1929, replaced an earlier store at the southwest corner of 2nd and Pike which had replaced the original store closer to Pioneer Square. The present store covers a complete block. The upper stories were added in the mid-1950s. This photograph was taken in 2003 facing northwest from Westlake Park across the intersection of 4th Avenue and Pine Street..
