The Bon Marche

Bellis Fair Mall - Bellingham, WA

Bellis Fair Mall opened in the late 1980s north of I-5 and west of SR 539/Guide Meridian on the site of a former nursery. The mall extends roughly east-west with The Bon Marche (rebranded Macy's in early 2005) on the east end and Sears on the west. Mervyn's and Target are on the north side of the mall and the food court and JC Penney on the south. There is a multiplex cinema on the west side of the food court. This mall has attracted many shoppers from Canada over the years due to the fact that it is the closest US shopping mall to Vancouver, B.C.

The Bon Marche, JC Penney, and Sears stores at the mall replace earlier downtown stores. The sign on the exterior of The Bon Marche store was one of the first if not the first to reflect a return to spelling out the whole name The Bon Marche. Stores built from the late 1970s through the mid 1980s and those remodeled in that time period were signed simply as The Bon. The Bellis Fair store uses the same typeface, however, as those signed as The Bon, e.g., those at Sea-Tac Mall and Everett Mall.

The photo was taken in October 2004.
