Boston's Subway, part of the MBTA transit system,
is referred to as the "T"
See "How to Ride the
"
following the directions for detailed instructions.
These instructions are useful for taking the T to ANY
destination.
How to ride the
Navigating
and riding the MBTA rapid transit system is simple. There are four color
coded subway lines whose direction is identified by terminal station. The
train destination is displayed on the front and sides of the train. If
you board an Alewife train at Downtown Crossing, it will travel north to
Alewife, stopping at all stations along the way. For example, you need
to take a Green Line LECHMERE train to get from Park Street to Science
Park.
-
Fares on the MBTA subway system are not
structured. The fare on all lines is $.85 adult, $.40 child up to 13, $.20
senior citizen w/TAP card.
-
In all stations on the Red, Orange, and
Blue lines, and SUBWAY (underground only) stations Green Line, the rider
purchases tokens at the collector booth and goes though turnstiles.
-
At Green Line SURFACE or ELEVATED stops,
the rider pays upon boarding the train. This includes Science Park. No
Tokens are sold at these stations. You must purchase them in advance OR
use EXACT CHANGE. Only the front doors of the train will open.
è
TIP: Lost or Confused in the Subway? The best person to ask is an MBTA
"Inspector" or MBTA Police officer.
-
The Green Line splits into four branches
past Copley Square. Train Destinations are displayed on the front of the
train, and the lines are identified by letter
   -
B- Boston College
   -
C- Cleveland Circle
   -
D- Riverside
   -
E- Heath Street (also called Arborway
on some maps)
- The Red Line splits into two branches
past JFK/UMass (to Braintree and Ashmont). Train Destinations are displayed on the front of the
train, and the lines are identified by Terminal Station. The Ashmont Branch also continues to Mattapan through a change to the
Mattapan High Speed Line.

Special Events can leave stations very
crowded, one to note is Kenmore Square after Red Sox Games. Although the
Kenmore crowds can’t be avoided, many tie-ups can. For example, after fireworks
over the harbor, Aquarium Station becomes overcrowded. Lines can exceed
40 minutes, but a short walk to Govt Center will save lots of time.
-
For Red Sox fans, the T now operates a
FREE shuttle for Ticket Holders to Ruggles Station on the Orange Line.
This shuttle will avoid crowds upon exiting Fenway Park.
è
TIP: Lost or Confused on the street? The best person to ask is a Boston
Police officer or BostonEMS / FD worker. They are usually stationed near
Fenway and other popular destinations.
-
The T also operates 3 cross-town bus routes
which stop at various locations throughout the city. CT1, CT2, and CT3
traverse the city and follow the most popular routes. These busses may
be an option for riders looking for local transit without the complexity
of the MBTA bus system, which includes hundreds of routes. These busses
operate as Express busses, and only stop at assigned stations. Pick
up a "System Map" at the Park Street Info booth or "T Underground."
-
Massport offers a free shuttle bus from
Airport Station to all terminals in Logan. The shuttle departs from the
terminals and the station every 2 minutes.
-
Subway Frequency. The MBTA system runs
from 5am to Midnight every day. Train frequencies in minutes:
