POSTAGE & HANDLING ON BOOKS I SELL

What is the best way to ship a book? That depends on your Priority (pun intended). At one time I sent everything Bookrate, which was cheap but slow. I now depend on Priority Mail for all shipments, because it is only a bit more ($5.50 for the average book instead of $3.50 by bookrate), is MUCH faster, and makes the customer happier.

I was once asked by a buyer why I charged $3.50 for mailing (in my Bookrate days) when he knew it only cost $2.75 to send the book. Wasn’t I ripping him off? While it’s true that bookrate postage alone costs $2.75 at the post office – that is only the Shipping half of Shipping & Handling. Very little is free in this world, and unfortunately mailing containers, labels, tape, packing peanuts and the like are not among them. And until I can convince my cat otherwise, 25 cents of each box he wraps for me goes into his catnip fund. Oddly, the Post Office provides FREE BOXES for Priority Mail, BUT YOU CAN'T USE THEM FOR BOOKRATE!!

I do try to save costs and the world at the same time by using only recycled plastic peanuts, and reusing boxes whenever I can; to do otherwise would go against the green-is-good Seattle environmental ethic. Furthermore, no book I sell has been produced with animal testing, although I do occasionally read to my cat, whose name is Boris or Mr. B. He prefers the novel form to the short story.
