When the doors finally opened we all made a mad dash and managed
to get right in front of the stage. First was Montrose and then
Foghat. We were so hyped-up about BOA that I can't remember much
about the other bands. Finally, it was time. The crowd went wild
when BOA hit the stage. Jim was in top form wearing white tights,
white knee-high boots, a fringy white leather vest, his famous
star buckle, his famous bear claw necklace, and his famous silver
wrist bands. I can't remember the exact setlist, but one
highlight for me was hearing them do Strong Enough To Be Gentle
(my favorite from X-Rated.)

Next, we decided to go over to the Fieldhouse and wait. There
were already a few people hanging around, so we perched ourselves
in front of the doors. We were determined to get up close. While
waiting, we chatted with some other BOA fans, and got to hear the
sound check. They kept trying Bump & Grind but couldn't get it
right, and it wasn't in their setlist. Sheila and I had Ralph and
Avis hold our spot in line, and decided to go around back to hear
the sound check better. We discovered an open door where we could
see as well as hear. We ended up getting autographs from the rest
of the band and got to talk to Rickie Lee and Tommy Aldridge.
There was a girl on my left who at one point in the show threw
her neck scarf up on stage. Jim picked it up and rubbed it over
his entire body and threw it back. The owner caught one end and I
caught the other. Neither was going to give it up without a
fight, and I think Ralph realized this, so quick as a wink, he
pulled out his pocket knife and cut that scarf in two pieces. I
still have my half with all my other BOA items. I ended up that
night with not only the scarf, but also one of Tommy Aldridge's
drumsticks and a huge piece of scrub board. I also got some great
photos, including the ones used on the King Biscuit CD. I don't
think anyone else in Rock ever put on a show that released so
much energy as BOA. Seeing them live in the early days of their
career was just awesome. Between 1974 and the present I've seen
BOA 19 times! In 25 years, I've never gotten tired of their
music. Sheila and I have gotten to know them better over the
years, but this was the first time we ever met the band, and was
an experience I'll never forget.
Keep The Faith everyone.
