As a Teenager, I remember my mom walking into my room, and
staring at this HUGE Black Oak Arkansas concert poster I had on
my wall. (One of those complete wall-sized ones with a lot of
different shots on it.) She would just kind of, stand there,
wringing her hands, saying, "Ohhh my, . . . Ohhh my", under her
breath. I'm sure those white spandex pants scared the BEEGEEZUS
out of her.
New Year's Eve, 1976. Black Oak Arkansas and Ruby Starr brought
the house down (of course).
But, the REALLY good part for me came directly after the show.
The promoters had hung tarps up on the sides of the stage,
effectively blocking off the quarter of the seats behind the
stage (oval arena). Right after Black Oak left the stage, my
girlfriends and I high-tailed it to the tarp . . . . . and
stepped behind it. No security, I guess because there was still a
railing and about a twenty-five foot drop to the back of the
stage, which was blocked off by the Black Oak backdrop . . . . .
It was completely dark inside. But, when our eyes became
accustomed to the darkness, there were all the members of Black
Oak Arkansas, directly below us, regrouping to go back onstage.
We went BERZERK! They looked up at us, smiled, and waved. I was
holding one of those green glowing chemical tube lights they sell
at concerts, and I threw it down to Jim Dandy. He ran it up his
body, from boots to mouth, kissed it and threw it back up to
me!!
Needless to say, I cherished that thing for a long time (Jim
Dandy sweat, dont'cha know).
