THE MENTAL GAME

New tips will be added constantly as they come in.

-How to beat a retriever The retriever is the type of player who camps on the baseline and hits absolutely everything back! They are extremly consistent and don't make many unforced errors. Trying to beat a retriever at its own game is wrong. Unless your one yourself and feel you're better. Anyways they key to beating a retriever is to bring them to the net or come up to the net yourself. Even if your not comfortable at the net it will get the retriever out of there comfort zone. Bringing the retriever to the net will bring them to be in a uncomfortable position.

-How to beat a serve and volley player Playing a serve and volley player is very tough. They are constantly putting pressure on you by coming to the net. Giving you less time to react. To beat aserve and volley player you must learn not to look at your opponet when they're at the net. By doing so you lose your concentration and focus on the ball. A useful shot to hit when your being attacked is the lob. By throwing up a couple lobs will keep your opponet honest and back away from the net. This willgive your opponet moreto think about if you're going to lob or hit a groundstroke. Another strategy to use is hitting a soft return. By doing this it will give your opponet a chance to make an error by trying to hit the ball to hard because they have no pace on the ball.

-Never serve first Brad Gilbert emphasized this tip in his book Winning Ugly. By letting your opponet serve first gives you more time to warm up and get relaxed in the match. It also gives you a pyschological edge on your opponet. They might be upset if you choose them to server first if you win the spin of the racket. They will be thinking that you think there serve is weak. Then they try to impress you with out of control power serves. Not all players will do this. But if they do great!

-Start your games at a moderate pace and move up When you start a match you should play at around 75 percent. Gardually as the game goes on, hit with more pace as you get more loose. When in the warmup don't hit balls as hard as you can. Take it easy with moderate strokes to get you warmed. Always gradually build until your at full speed.

-Analyze your opponets strokes before the match Before them atch even starts take a good look at your opponets shots during the warm up. Look at their weak parts of their game and where their powerful. Finding a weakness and exploiting during the match can mean the difference between winning and losing.
