“The Night World isn’t a place. It’s all around us.
It’s a secret society of vampires, werewolves,
witches, and other creatures of darkness that live
among us. They’re beautiful and deadly and
irresistible to humans. Your high school teacher
could be one, and so could your boyfriend.
The Night World laws say it’s okay to hunt humans.
It’s okay to toy with their hearts, it’s even okay
to kill them.
There are only two things you can’t do with them.

1) Never let them find out that the Night World exists.
2) Never fall in love with one of them.

These are stories about what happens when the rules get broken.”
-L.J. Smith

The Night World is L.J. Smith’s first series. We don’t know for sure when it’s going to end, or if it’s going to end. Most of us, though, are figuring Strange Fate will be it. Each book in the Night World has a different plot and a different set of characters, but they are all interrelated somehow. The running theme of the Night World is soulmates. Every lead character finds his or her soulmate somehow. Most of the time, it’s a human soulmated with a Night Worlder (vamp, ‘shifter, witch…etc.). The only exception is Witchlight, where two ‘shifters are soulmates.
The rule of soulmates is: once you meet yours, you can never love another person again; even if you can’t live with your soulmate. It’s neat and stinky at the same time.

Another major theme of The Night World is the nearing of the new millennium. Basically, when the clock strikes 12:00 on dec. 31, 1999, the crap will hit the fan. The world will them be plunged into your basic battle between good and evil. If evil wins…humans are in big trouble! Will good win? Or will the Night World rule? Well, if LJ would write some more…maybe we’d know!!

Books of the Night World

I think this series is obviously good, I mean it is an L.J. Smith venture. But it’s a little weak also. There is very little character development and it’s way too fast paced. She fits what would make one hell of a trilogy into a 240-page novella. It’s a shame because this series had the potential to blow the rest…possibly even the Vampire Diaries, out of the water. Anyway, no point in dwelling on the past, let’s talk about the future. Strange Fate has a release date, according to Amazon books, for Nov. 99. Now…if this is correct…Strange Fate could be in the stores at the latest by the middle of October…that’s a month away! But I won’t get my hopes up…I refuse. I still think it’s suspicious that she re-released all of her old stuff. Anyway, we shall see won’t we! I promise that I will have a complete page up for Strange Fate right after I read it. Just give me an hour.

I’m giving the Night World 3 dahlias because of the fact that it just doesn’t satisfy its readers. We are all forced to create detailed and elaborate fanfics to soothe our minds. I mean for crying out loud…what in the hell did happen with Ash and Mary-Lynnette???
