Hook Daiichi # 1480 Size 12 Limerick Bend Mini-Barb
Materials White 8/0 Thread, Black 6/0 Thread, EZ-DUB (Small Olive) Reeves Pheasant Tail Fibers. Wings are tiny feathers off a grouse cape but you can use any light color feathers of a cape of your choice, Black fine tip Permanent Ink Pen. Epoxy Glue.
Build Start winding White 8/0 thread behind hook eye, catch in small piece of Black 6/0 thread at this point, now wind white thread along to hook bend and back to hook eye then back again to the hook bend, now use the small black piece of thread and wind body segmentation along the hook shank. Tie off the black thread and cover the body with a thin layer of epoxy glue. Now attach 2 tiny cape feathers of your choice for the wings at the hook bend using only 2 or three turns of 8/0 thread and apply a little super glue to the thread.

Now make up 6 legs from the fibers of a Reeves Pheasant Tail (Which is mottled with black and white) Tie 2 granny knots close to each other and when making the loop use a needle to draw the end of the fiber, this makes it a little easier to make the knots.

Now apply each leg 3 on either side at the thorax area with only 3 turns of thread per leg, once in place and happy with position, apply a little super glue on the thread. Now the tricky bit, turn the hook on the vice so the hook eye is more or less pointing down, now using 8/0 thread catch in a strand of Small Olive EZ-DUB. at just forward of hook barb, apply a tiny bit of super glue to the thread and cut off the thread. now carefully wind the EZ-DUB building small head with a couple of turns and then separate the legs and wind in between them to finally build a thorax.. in order to finally tie off the EZ-BUB I have just applied super glue to the EZ-DUB. This makes a permanent fix and then cut the EZ-DUB with a razor blade. Now use a Black Permanent ink Pen to mark a Black head and stagger a few dots on the thorax area. and hey presto! Watch it don't bite you.

Other versions include fitting a Proboscis using 2lb mono. and also changing wing color to a lighter shade. and building a better head with black thread. Fit the Proboscis and build the head during the stage following the Tricky bit as above prior to attaching the EZ-DUB.

This realistic version of the Mosquito (which see) was originated by Leon Guthrie. Leon also collaborated with Scotty Howell for an original Classic Hairwing, the Nigel Fell Hairwing . You can see more of Leon's work at The Flies of Leon Guthrie.
