Leon's Black Widow Spider
Originated and Tied By Leon Guthrie

Leon
Name Leon's Black Widow Spider
Category Salmon and Trout Species
HookKamasan B100N (Nickel) Size 10
BodyBlack Thread, Epoxy Resin Glue (Araldite). Build small round sphere with black thread and then build on epoxy resin in stages to make shape of the Large Abdomen of the Black Widow Spider. Paint on the Distinctive (Red) Hourglass mark on the underside of the abdomen and recover with epoxy. The legs are 6lb Monofilament Nylon knotted 3 times with the knots placed close to the head/thorax area (8 legs). The head/thorax area is Epoxy Glue. When near set it is pressed with flat nosed pliers to give it that distinctive flatter appearance. Retouch with epoxy and use a Black Permanent Ink Pen to create the Red Hourglass Mark. Put a square of red enamel paint and when dry, use the Black pen (make the shape of the Hourglass mark by drawing over the red paint). It makes a neater mark that way. Put epoxy glue over to protect the mark.

Leon's Black Widow Spider is originated and tied by Leon Guthrie. You can see more of Leon's originals at The Flies of Leon Guthrie. See his notes about this fly below.

Leon's Notes: Although categorized as one of my Novelty Patterns, The Black Widow Spider still catches fish and can be fun to use when other anglers ask "what you are using'" Fish Static on Fisheries or allow to sink and bob about on the riverbed. Although the Black Widow Spider can grow to about One and a Half Inch in length and 1/4 inch (6.4mm) in diameter, I have chosen to use the Kamasan Shrimp Buzzer Hook in size 10 which seems to hook into the largest of fish without any problems, barbed or de-barbed.
