HookKamasan B800 Classic Lure Extra Long Size 8 (Or Salmon Single)
BodyWeighted with 4mm Gold Bead. White Thread. Attach several strands of White Polyester Elastic, about 1-1/4 inch in length near the hook bend for the tail. Take about 6 inches of Veniard Cactus Chenille Fine (Fluorescent Green) and also attach near hook bend. Leave this alone for later. Now cut more of the elastic to lengths of 1-1/4 inch or so. Selecting 3 or 4 stands at a time, attach to the sides of the hook shank by winding the tying thread through the middle of the length of elastic as in a V. Repeat this all over the hook shank applying on top and or the underside of the hook shank while working towards the gold head, so all the elastic strands are protruding at all angles. Wind the Cactus Chenille towards the Gold Bead. Use a cocktail stick or dubbing needle to separate the elastic strands while turning the Cactus Chenille very slowly around the hook shank. Only make half turns at a time while dressing the elastic strands to go either left or right of the Cactus Chenille as you rotate it. Finally, tie off the Cactus Chenille behind the Gold Head and apply a drop of Super Glue on the thread.
CommentsBeing a weighted sub-surface pattern, this produces much movement on the retrieve and has proved to be a very effective pattern (based on the Cats Whisker but Using elastic instead of White Marabou). Also, the elastic strands do not wrap around the hook bend, which is the usual problem using marabou. The red or pink fluorescent Cactus Chenille is also effective for Salmon but I include lead on the hook shank together with the Gold Head when using on fast flowing rivers to get it down quicker. Takes on this can be very harsh when you least expect it.

This pattern was originated and tied by Leon Guthrie of Galashiels, Scotland. You can see more of his originals at The Flies of Leon Guthrie.
