Brief Sojurn
Not young, not yet old,
Aunt Judy soundlessly died of complications
secondary to a congenital heart defect.
She wore pink corduroy and pony tails
the day her father and mother agreed
that corrective surgery was not essential,
and agreeing stole life from her,
just as the wound of differences
stole her childhood as well.
Youngsters snickered,
agonizing the dark-haired girl
who never did scramble,
dash, frolic, or romp.
Alone, avoiding them,
Judy entered a world of books.
She adored Winnie-the-Pooh stories,
refusing to read the final page
"because then it would end."
