Experience

Reporter. Kent Reporter, Kent, Wash.; Auburn Reporter, Auburn, Wash.; Renton Reporter, Renton, Wash. (February 2003 to present.) Wrote sports and business feature stories for this trio of bi-weekly papers in addition to general assignment work.

Reporter. Henderson Home News, Henderson, Nev. and Boulder City News, Boulder City, Nev. (June 2001 to December 2002.) Wrote high school sports game stories and local sports features. Also covered a variety of news beats, including City Hall, religion, senior citizens issues, effects of growth, a $39.5 million expansion of Henderson City Hall in addition to a half dozen other major capital construction projects as well as a variety of general assignment stories. Generated an average of eight stories per week for the two newspapers.

News reporting intern. The Las Vegas Sun, Las Vegas, Nev. (Sept. 2000 to June 2001). Reported on a variety of topics ranging from Boy Scouts to the Department of Youth and Family Services to gay rights and neighborhood halfway houses for recovering addicts. After two months of general assignment work, began a temporary assignment reporting on the Henderson and Boulder City beat covering issues in the Las Vegas suburbs as well as council meetings. Was later reassigned to cover the bustling suburb of North Las Vegas, which included reporting on casino controversies, ethics charges filed against the mayor and a city councilmember indicted on insurance fraud charges.

News and editorial assistant. The Eastside Journal, Bellevue, Wash.(July 1999 to Aug. 2000). Writing obituaries, news briefs, and completing other tasks on daily deadlines for the news and features sections of the paper, as well as taking box scores for sports, web archiving and a weekly feature for the opinion section.

Sports correspondent. The Spokesman-Review, Spokane, Wash.(Sept. 1997 to March 1998). Took call-in box scores for high school sports during fall and winter seasons, wrote feature articles for the recreation page and other tasks for the prep section.

Reporter. Gonzaga University’s The Bulletin, Spokane, Wash.(Sept. 1996 to May 1998). Covered women’s sports, campus politics and nation and world issues for the weekly campus paper for two years and wrote both assigned and enterprise stories.

Reporter and columnist. The Seattle Times Mirror, Seattle, Wash. (June 1994 to June 1996). Wrote sports features that reflected the concerns of the teen readers including enterprise and assigned stories. Also wrote monthly columns on topics ranging from the commercialization of sports to the importance of athletics in the lives of teenagers.
