NOTE: To be avoided, at least as a commercial artifact. Includes many officially released tracks, noted in italics. The original vinyl set was a sprawling, haphazard compilation dominated by material that had been circulating freely since the early to mid-1970s; while the packaging was elaborate for its time, its information -- drawn mostly from Paul Cable's unsturdy survey of Dylan bootlegs -- proved generally unreliable and frequently incorrect. The facsimile booklet is drawn entirely from Cable's text; it is riddled with errors, and its graphics are pirated from Dylan's lyric collections. The set's misleading organization is based on these inaccurate attributions of source recordings. Originally desireable mostly for the quality of its pressing, the long delay in issuing the commercial CD boot set demonstrates how thoroughly the set has been superseded since its original appearance more than fifteen years ago. All of this material circulates in more complete and/or better-sounding form. The insult is compounded by the inflated price at which the set is typically offered for sale. The inexplicable demand for this project has already spawned systematic CDR cloning. The "original" issue, touted as glass-mastered, has not been verified as such to date.
This version of the set reportedly omits one track, "See That My Grave Is Kept Clean," from the Minnesota Hotel Tape.

Heylin: Really a rather humdrum release.

rmd: Of course 95% (if not 100%) of the set has been surpassed by later CD releases.
