Hoquiam Math Olympics

We’re working now to update the Hoquiam Math Olympics site. We will include a list of our Math Club activities, our bibliography, and the flyer we are designing for our Middle School Math Club. We’ll also tell you about our new Origami Club, which is starting in September, as a “Partner Club” to the Math Club.

Please check our site again around July 15, and we’ll have a lot more in here.

Thanks!

Article by Tommi R. Gatlin, Daily World Writer.

Sixty-two students from Aberdeen and Hoquiam participated in the first-ever Hoquiam Math Olympiad at Washington Elementary School on Friday.

The competition was based on the Washington State Math Olympiad, which takes place on the first Saturday of May each year in a number of locations statewide.

“It’s such a great opportunity for top math students,” said Washington Elementary Principal Wes Harris. “They don’t have another opportunity to show and demonstrate their mathematics capabilities in a competition environment.”

The students came from St. Mary’s School in Aberdeen, and Washington, Lincoln and Central elementary schools in Hoquiam.

The purpose of the Hoquiam event was to give advanced math students in the fifth- and sixth-grades a chance to participate in a math competition, Harris said.

The students, who competed in teams of three or four, did well, Harris said. He noted that measurement was the teams’ strongest point. Teams could receive ratings of “Good,” “Very Good,” “Superior” and “Excellent.”

“We had 16 ‘Excellent’ ratings, eight ‘Superior’ and one perfect score,” Harris reported. Eighteen teams participated in the five segments of competition.

Also taking in the Olympiad, which began at 9 a.m. and continued until mid-afternoon, were observers from math education classes from Grays Harbor College and six assistants, math students from Hoquiam High School.

The state competition was designed by the Washington State Mathematics Council to meet the standards of the Washington State Essential Academic Learning requirements, Harris said. Tests from the year’s previous state Olympiad are available to individual school districts for competitions like the one in Hoquiam.

Harris said support for the Hoquiam competition came from Harbor establishments, including Grays Harbor Paper, Quigg Bros.-Schermer Inc. Timberland Savings Bank, Grays Harbor College, Wal-Mart, The Daily World, and private individuals.

Each child received a T-shirt, packet of materials, certificate and ribbon, the principal said.

Brian Sterling, president of the Safe Harbor Corp. of Hoquiam, a homegrown group that hopes to establish new industry using the Internet and other new technology, introduced the competition by explaining to the students the value of math and working together in the ”real world.”
