I went to Winter Cup prelims and finals this year on Feb. 17th. It was a great competition! Finals provided some specacular routines. Here is a brief report on the highlights:

Jason Gatson- What can you say? Sometime he has to beat Blaine! I really want him to. Blaine is good and all, but Jason has something he doesn't. There is just better presentation, form and execution are way better than Blaines (IMHO). Of Floor, he did a double layout full out (E-.2), full-layout-rudi (D+E-.5), whip-1 1/2-rudi (D+E-.5), Fedorchenko (D-.1), full in (D-.1). He stuck his dismount and was given a 10.0 because of the USA rules (.4 extra bonus). His Pommels were good, but I did not catch the score. Rings is still weak for him, but he is very clean there. He does some Guzougy (sp?) combos, and a backup rise planche. This is the one event where if he could improve, he would beat Blaine everytime. Vault was gorgeous!! Both days, he did a layout Rudi (1 1/2 twists), and stuck it cold. P-bars is also a strong event for him. He does his patented hop 1/1 piroette out of a healy, and tons of other combos. High bar is good, but could use a little work on exactness in the piroetting skills. He throws a Kovacs and layout double-double though.

Blaine Wilson- He is good, but I think beatable (as we saw in American Cup prelims). Floor is still shaky, but he gets a lot of bonus from flairs, so he scores high (9.7 second day I think). Full layout rudi and whip, 1 1/2 rudi combos with a full in dismount. He has good swing on Pommels, and his rings are still in the top 3 in the nation. He does a planche, maltese, two inverted crosses, and a stuck layout full out. Here he only vaulted a layout rudi, and stumbled both days on it. P bars was good too, with a giant, giant diamidov, giant double back combo. On high bar he revealed a new release, a Carballo. It was very sloppy, and he missed it the first day of prelims. He caught it the second day, but it was low and nothing like Jesus's (Carballo of Spain). He mainly gets his bonus from cheap stalder and endo combos, and only has that one release but wraps it up with a solid double-double.

Chris Young- I think that Chris has some of the most amazing routines of any US gymnast. Yeah, you can say his form needs a little work, but the tricks he does are awesome!! He vaults a booming double front (which he only took at step on in prelims), double backs on PB, TWO full twisting layout Tkachevs, and two .5 passes on FX. He did not compete in finals for some reason. I think I heard it was an injury or something.

Trent Wells- He started finals off with a bang on HB. He did several Takamoto and Ono combinations with some inbar work. Also a Gienger, and a layout double double I think. Floor was weak, but he did have a full-layout-rudi combo. Pommels were solid, but nothing spectacular. Rings were also weak. He did a layout and tucked Guzoghy (I can never spell that right!!) though. I'm pretty sure he vaulted either a full or 1 1/2 twisting Tsukahara. And his PB routine was really nice! He does two of his freaky giants, a tippelt (overrated E skill!), back toss and a double pike. He scored pretty high there also.

John Roethlisberger- He still isn't completely recovered from his knee problem, but he did throw sets on PH, R, PB and HB (the latter three minus dismounts) in prelims. He is doing basically the same routines I saw him do at Nationals I think. Hopefully he will be healed up by ITC or Nationals.

Overall, it was a great competition that showcased the talents of this country's male gymnasts. Blaine Wilson proved that he is the one to beat but there are several gymnasts who are closing the gap.
