Terragen is probably the most inovative and user friendly tool there is for making near realistic landscapes.
The only thing better than the program itself is that it is completely FREE. Below are some images I generated using nothing but Terragen.
I realize that these images are not fractal related; yet, I feel that they are worthy of a place of thier own.

These images were made using a Mars atmosphere and a multi perlin terrain with a minimal amount of canyonism.
