CRITIQUE
Judge: MR ANDREW J BURT (Victoria)
Firstly, a big thankyou to the Bullmastiff Club of Western Australia for the wonderful invitation to officiate at your first Championship Show. Congratulations to all those associated with the Club on reaching this
milestone! Thank you to all the exhibitors for your entries - especially those that drove long distances to attend. I hope that this critique will provide some insights into my thoughts on your dogs and I hope that all my comments will be accepted as constructive. However, remember that this is just one judge's opinion on one particular day. I wish you all the very best for the future.
PUPPY DOG
BUDMARA JADAM LEE - 6 month old fawn pup. Pleasing pigmentatrion and very good dark eye. An immature head but pleasing proportions with a good bite. Nicely balanced body with good bone, well knuckled feet and black toenails. Movement flowed quite well but tended to crab as he moved away. Very sound temperament.
JUNIOR DOG
1st - MOANAWAIMA CAMERON
Young fawn dog with a very fit, athletic appearance. Head was reasonable but I would like to see more stop and a shorter muzzle. Very nice dark eye and good pigmentation. Well constructed body with a very good topline. Bone structure of tail could be a little straighter. His movement flowed well in profile but he tended to track very closely behind. His temperament was very happy and alert.
2nd MOANAWAIMA FLINT
A dog with a great deal of substance - probably a little more than my preference. Reasonable pigmentation but it could be a little more extensive. Nice skull but the muzzle was a little longer than ideal - however it had plenty of strength to it. Bite pleasing. Hindquarters were straighter in stifle than first dog and hind movement and drive were not as pleasing.
INTERMEDIATE DOG
1st CH KENBACK GHENGIS KHAN - An alert, dark fawn dog of medium size and excellent quality. Very pleasing head with a very dark , clean eye. Being very critical, his muzzle could be slightly shorter.
His bone and substance were balanced and strong but not overdone. His body was very well developed and muscled. Chest was deep and broad and topline strong - both on the stack and the move. He moved very well with pleasing drive but a little closer behind than the ideal. Overall, a very typical dog with many very pleasing attributes. In my opinion this dog was clearly the best type in the male line up on the day, thus his award of Challenge Dog.
2nd KAREVYA HARLEQUIN LEVI
Young, light fawn dog, well up in size. He possessed a very happy and alert temperament. Nicely proportioned skull and muzzle with very pleasing pigmentation, although his ear pigmentation could be darker. I would like to see a darker eye. His substance was reasonable and will improve with
maturity. I would like to see more development and width in the chest. This dog, moved in profile with a very typical east, unexaggerated drive and reach, exhibiting power and strength whilst keeping his topline - this won him the Best Movement award. His hind movement was very true but coming towards me, his front movement could be straighter. His Best Fawn award recognises his clear colour and pleasing pigmentation. This dog pushed the Open winner very hard for the Reserve Challenge and will improve with
maturity.
STATE BRED DOG
NIGHTWATCH DON PEDRO - This dog was very typical in many ways but too cumbersome for my liking. He had excellent head proportions but appeared a little coarse. Pigmentation was excellent. Eyes were a little too deep set and not as clean as I like to see. Chest was well developed and topline was very pleasing. Feet were a problem with very little knuckling. Movement was quite true and free and temperament was excellent.
AUST. BRED DOG
KOIWI KRACKA JACK - Six year old red dog. Very good type and body proportions. Nice type of head with dark eyes and plenty of pigmentation. Chest was deep but lacked somewhat in breadth. Topline
reasonable - slight weakness probably associated with age. Feet were too splayed for my liking. His profile movement was pleasing but tended to cross behind.
OPEN DOG
CH BULLMASTER BARNSTORMER - Another typical example of the breed but my preference is for a less cumbersome and more agile type of animal. His bone and body proportions were good but he lacked in tuck up and appeared a little cumbersome. Head qualities were pleasing with a good braod skull - althoughbeing critical, the muzzle could still be a little more square. Overall, very typical and well deserved winner of the Best Head award. I would like to see more width of chest in this dog and his topline was not as strong as I would like. This dog possessed pleasing reach and drive but front movement coming towards me was not as true as I would like. His colour was clear and temperament alert and typical despite the affect the heat was having upon him. Maturity gave this dog the RESERVE CHALLENGE award over the second place winner in Intermediate.
BABY PUPPY BITCH
1st AMAZINGBULL EUREKA GOLD
Fawn pup which appeared rather small for her age. Overall, not as breed typical as I would expect for over five months of age. She was a little more undershot that I like to see and I would also have liked more width in her muzzle. Her pigmentation was excellent. The ears need work to ensure they sit correctly after teething.
2nd AMAZINGBULL SHANA - Apricot fawn pup - again not as breed typical as I would expect to see by this age. Rather plain in head - needing more development of stop and a shorter, brioader muzzle. More pigmentation needed around the eyes and on the ears. The ears need work to ensure they sit correctly after teething.
JUNIOR BITCH
MOANAWAIMA ANUK - Smaller sized fawn bitch with excellent pigmentation and pleasing head properties. Body proportions and substance were pleasing. Her rear angulation was lacking and the straight stifle led to a more stilted rear movement. Feet were tight and well knuckled. This bitch did not show to her best advantage and moved her head very close to the ground for a lot of her time in the ring.
INTERMEDIATE BITCH
1ST TIGERGULLY CLAUDIA ROSE - Very typical red bitch who was clearly the best bitch for me on the day hence her award of Challenge Bitch. She was not used to the show ring. I hope that other exhibitors excused the change of handlers, together with my help in stacking the bitch but my aim was to determine the most typical specimen in the ring and this appeared to be the best way to achieve this. Very similar head qualities to the Challenge Dog - good masking and reasonably dark and clean eyes. Very similar head qualities to the Challenge Dog - good masking and muzzle proprtions. To be very critical, I would like a slightly shorter muzzle. Good depth and width of chest and pleasing bone and substance. The topline was excellent - both on the stack and on the move. She moved around the ring well and was sound moving away from me and towards me. This bitch was a little more undershot
thatn I ideally like to see.
2nd SHOWSTOPPER BARONESS - Compact fawn bitch with pleasing body proportions and good pigmentation. Her temperament was also very pleasing. Her feet were well knuckled and colour was very even. This bitch was not as true in movement as I would expect when moving away from me and
towards me.
STATE BRED
CH BURGOWOOD COTEHELE - Fawn bitch of 21/2 years. Pleasing pigmentation but lacking in head qualities. Stop was inadequate and the muzzle was rather long and narrow. Her body proprtions were excellent and she possessed plenty of substance - qualities that earned her the award of Best Body She was too steep in her croup for my liking and this would probably affect her level of rear drive. She moved quite well out and back but was very sluggish in profile - not demonstrating much reach and drive. Her feet were
poor, lacking in knuckling and appearing more like a hare foot. Her coat was excellent - very good condition and quite harsh. She also was very well trained and presented a very alert picture on the stack.
OPEN BITCH
KOIWI KRACKA DAWN - Fawn bitch of 6 years. Pigmentation was excellent - particularly on the ears. Head was reasonably typical but could have been a little wider in skull and muzzle. Good strong stop. Body was well developed with good breadth and depth of chest. Slightly longer in loin than the ideal. Angulation front and rear was very pleasing. Moved well in profile. Hind action very pleasing but coming towards me her front action was not as true as I would like. This bitch appeared a little unsure about her surroundings but did all that her owner asked. She was clearly the bitch Reserve Challenge winner on the day.
I was most pleased that, in my opinion, the dog and bitch winner were of such similar type. Often, even in larger entries than today, this is hard to find. Both animals were very pleasing to me and would be competitive Australia wide. Congratulations to the Best in Show winner Ch. Kenback Ghengis Khan. He won his award over the bitch due to greater maturity, better ring manners and his better mouth. However, Tigergully Claudia Rose was most deserving of her Runner Up to Best Exhibit in Show award. She is a
fine specimen of the breed.
