A struggling, screenplay writer named Joe finds refuge at Norma Desmond's house on Sunset Boulevard, from men who want his car. An eccentric, old, silent movie star, she takes him in, sets him to work on a screenplay for her, and falls in love with him. Despite an affection for a secretary, Betty Shaefer, Joe succumbs to Norma because of her threatened and attempted suicides. Neither Norma nor her butler, Max, let Joe leave and when he tries, there are disastrous consequences.
