The Maltese shown above is my very own
CH Misty Ridge's Mystic Moment AKA Misty. She is my first
pick puppy from my first litter! How kewl is that?
Art objects dating back 3,000 years depict the beautiful little Maltese,
whose breed name may derive from the Island of Malta or the Sicilian
town of Melita. Widespread throughout continental Europe, the breed was
also well known in Britain at the time of Elizabeth I (1558-1603). Whether
the breed was brought to Britain at the time of the Roman invasion or by
returning Crusaders is a moot question. The breed gained favor and
popularity wherever it became known and was among the first of the purebreds
to be exhibited at dog shows on this continent. The Maltese is affectionate
and intelligent. This dog's trust and responsiveness are very appealing. The
breed is among the gentlest mannered of all little dogs. It measures up to
10 inches at the shoulder, and weighs up to 7 pounds, the AKC Standard is
4 to 6 lbs. Itís pure white, silky coat is long and hangs straight to the ground
from a center part running from nose to tail. Dark eyes and pigmentation of
nose, lips and eye rims enhance the expression. The coat needs daily brushing
to stay tangle-free and frequent bathing to keep it sparkling white, even if you
choose to give it a shorter pet trim. A fine pet for limited accommodations,
exercise needs are minimal.
