For the Herald.
Pittsford, Dec. 4th 1843
On the 2nd inst. a meeting of a respectable number of the citizens of this town was held at the Temperance House in this village, for the purpose of appointing a delegation to meet a convention to be held at Brattleboro’ on the 5th.

It was stated at the meeting that the convention at Brattleboro' was called to consult as to the most feasible and practicable route for a rail road from Brattleboro' to Burlington, and for further enquiry, as to what would probablv be the amount of tonnage that would pass over the different routes from each town in exports and imports……

On motion,
The Chairman appointed a committee to select five delegates to meet the rail road convention to be held at Brattleboro’, on which committee, the chairman proceeded to appoint. Thomas F. Booge, Thomas McLaughlin, Samuel D. Winslow, Chester Granger, and J. R. Newell…..

Those who were present exhibited a good degree of zeal in the cause of advocating the advantages a rail way would produce to the inhabitants of this side of the Green Mountains, passing through Rutland county…all agreeing that without an effort on the part of the citizens of Rutland county particularly, we should lose all the advantages that a rail way would otherwise furnish. And that if the people remained inactive on the subject, instead of the proposed rail road passing thro’ Rutland county to Burlington, it would be laid up the Connecticut, through Montpelier to Burlington….

For the Herald –
…We had a very pleasant gathering at Col. McLaughlin’s on Thursday evening, the 1st inst, and our host entertained so well, and we enjoyed the interview so much, that directions were given by those present ‘to have the proceedings published.’ Those who came together came from the different sections of the town, as friends and neighbors, without any of the formalities of invitation, to pass the evening in a social way and testify the interest they felt in sustaining a public house among us conducted on strictly temperance principles, and to show to Col. McLaughlin that he had their entire confidence and approbation as a host and landlord, and should have their cordial support in his voluntary determination and effort to give us and the public a house of this character. A company of over a hundred gentlemen and ladies….sat down to the well arranged and abundantly furnished table….During the progress of the supper, the following sentiments were introduced and responded to unanimously…….

[included]

Our Host and Hostess – May they long remain with us to dispense their good cheer and make the stranger and way-farer say, from the fullness of their hearts, ‘I can here take my EASE in mine own Inn.’

Our Public Houses – May they ever throw their influence on the side of good order and sobriety, and never openly or covertly do ought to sap the foundations of either – may their SIGNS be a ‘man erect’, and not a reeling or fallen one……..

The reading of the sentiments being concluded, the following resolutions were presented and adopted without dissent….

[included]

Resolved, that the thanks of the company be tendered to Mr. and Mrs. McLaughlin for the very handsome manner with which they have entertained us – with the hope that when the 1st of February, 1845, comes round, they may again furnish us with similar pleasure.

Resolved, that we will cheerfully contribute our aid and influence in sustaining a thorough going Temperance House….

The company then withdrew from the tables – it being now about 9 o’clock – and after passing another pleasant social hour went to their homes, well pleased and satisfied with the first Temperance SOIREE in PITTSFORD.

Summary: In a story related to the September seizure of 100 gallons of liquor from the Express Office, Martin McLaughlin and Martin McLaughlin, Jr. went to court to claim $10 worth of the liquor, apparently with the explanation that it was not intended for sale. They risked a fine and court costs if, under the somewhat complicated prohibitionary laws, the jury found against them. However, as they were not able to prove their ownership of the liquor, the trial was adjourned.

The Liquor Seizure.
Mr. Editor: On the 22d day of last September, Officer Perkins started for the Express Office in this place, duly equipped with a warrant to search for intoxicating liquor. He found about 100 gallons and removed the same to a place of safety. The kegs and barrels were directed to fictitious persons and by secret marks, so that the officer could not tell who of the many in attendance were the owners – and he therefore summoned the Express Agent in this place, in whose custody he found said liquor, as the keeper thereof. The Agent not appearing, and no person claiming the liquor, Justice Howe, after being convinced that said liquor was intended for sale, contrary to law, ordered Officer Perkins to destroy it, which he did.

On the arrival of the evening train the same day, from the Rum City, Sheriff Edgerton took charge of about 100 gallons of liquor after it was safely lodged in the Express office. The agents went through the ceremony of “calling off the different vessels by their secret marks,” and then the Sheriff removed them to a place of security, and summoned the Express Agent as the keeper thereof.

In a few days some six different persons made known their wishes to the Court that he would permit them to take away “the leetle” they had bought for their owners. A father and his three sons laid claim upon about 45 gallons; to support whose claim Messrs. Thrall and Wood appeared as counsel, and P. M. Sayles and the State’s Attorney appeared for the prosecution. There are many perplexing questions arising under this part of the law pertaining to the seizure of liquor. It was submitted to the Justice that no one could appear in Court as claimant of the [illegible], by the officer seizing the liquor. But wishing to have the practice liberal , and not to deprive anyone of their just rights, and that any liquor seized, if not intended for sale, should be delivered up, the objection was not urged and the Court allowed Martin McLaughlin and Martin McLaughlin, Jr., who claimed $10 worth of liquor, a trial by jury. The Justice decided that the claimant must first show to the jury their title to the liquor claimed before they could compel the prosecution to prove that the liquor claimed was intended for sale: for unless they were the owners they had no right in Court, and there was no issue for the jury. The claimants after attempting this and failing, were compelled to ask for an adjournment, to obtain further proof.

It would appear to be the better way in these cases of claimants to adopt some practice by which they may be made parties, and so liable to a fine and costs, and not be at liberty to withdraw at any time their case looks dark; and therefore that the Court should compel these claimants to show by legal testimony that they are the real owners of the liquor they claim, and then to have them summoned as owners, in which case the question of ownership could not be brought in issue and the simple question would be, was the liquor intended for sale contrary to law. As this case stands adjourned one week, I will inform you how it finally settled. Officers Gibson and Perkins have made three other seizures of liquor, at the rum holes near the Depot. Justice Howe has ordered said liquor to be spilled.

Police Items -
On Saturday last, James Logue and John Tappan were brought before Justice Smith on a charge of drunkenness, and, upon conviction, paid a fine and costs amounting to $11.35 each.

Bridget McLaughlin, John Stewart and William Stewart were "up" the same day for violation of the liquor law, and were respectively convicted and fined.

On Saturday, Officer Kingsley made a descent upon the groggeries of William Stewart, Ed. Lawler, Pat. McLaughlin and Pat. Brisline, and finding considerable quantities of liquor on the premises, confiscated the same, which Justice Weeks afterwards decided should be "spilt."

BROTHERS, AROUSE! - Our native land is endeavoring to free itself from the tyranny of the government which for centuries has oppressed our forefathers and ourselves. Our Brethren have ere this, we are assured, struck the first blow, and insomuch as we are prevented from contributing to the success of the long-wished for result of being with them to strike with our arms at the heart of the hireling tyrants, let us contribute to their assistance what they most need - funds.

Therefore, all Irishmen who have the welfare of the green isle of their nativity at heart, and all other true lovers of liberty, are requested to meet at Fenian Hall (upper Town Hall) on Tuesday evening Dec. 4th to take such measures as to them may seem prudent in aiding our brethren in this, their hour of peril.

An Interesting Old Lady.
Mrs. Mary McLaughlin lives on Green street, Rutland. She is a smart old lady, ninety four years of age. Notwithstanding her extreme old age, she does all, or nearly all, of her housework: can knit and sew, threads the finest needle without the aid of glasses, and can dance with all the ease and fire of a young Irish lass, if we may judge from the exhibition of her powers, as reported to us, at the recent wedding of one of her grandchildren. She also constantly attends church, walking in fair weather the entire distance from her house to the church.

Her maiden name was Mary Rourke, being of the Mayo county (Ireland) family of Rourkes, somewhat famous in Irish history. She was in Ireland during the rebellion of 1798, and frequently entertains her children and others, with reminiscences and anecdotes of that thrilling and romantic episode in Irish history. To the Public
In the Herald of Wednesday was published an account of a seizure in the "Home Restaurant," in which article was mentioned the name of J. McLaughlin, which accuses me of keeping the place. The article does me great injustice and is placing me in a bad light before the public, as I have not, for the past three months, had any connection whatever with the saloon or barroom, but am merely an occupant of the house. I trust in justice to myself that you will make this correction.

SATURDAY'S SEIZURES
On Saturday, officers Perkins and Crawford took a little turn around among the liquor sellers meeting with fair success.
At Charles Allen's place they dug up a gallon of gin from a secret place under the basement floor.
At J. McLaughlin's house they secured a six-quart milk can full of liquor on the top shelf of the buttery.
Another place, supposed to belong to either James Crowley or John McCormick, was relieved of two jugs which were found
in a secret hole underneath the floor of the basement.

Good Templars Visit
Last evening the members connected with Rutland Lodge I. O. of G. T. spent one of the pleasantest evenings at their hall it has been their lot to enjoy for some considerable time past. The occasion of this pleasure was the visit of about thirty members from Brandon Lodge. As was announced, at 8:30 o'clock the doors of the hall were thrown open to the friends of the cause, and we regret that so few availed themselves of the opportunity to listen to the interesting literary exercises presented by the visiting members.
Mr. H. M. Mott of the Brandon "Union", presided over the literary exercises, which were both interesting and instructive. The following is the programme:
1. Music by members of Brandon Lodge.
2. Recitation - Mrs. E. M. Cross
3. Declamation - Mr. Potter Stafford
4. Recitation - Miss P. A. Edson
5. Declamation - Mr. W. R. Gregg
6. Recitation - Mill Jessie Culbert
7. Declamation - Mr. Irwin McKenna
Interesting remarks then followed by

SEVERE ACCIDENT

A severe accident, which may yet prove fatal, occurred at Bellows Falls yesterday. The victim was a young man named Martin McLaughlin, a resident of Rutland, employed on Conductor Thrall's wood train. While the train was moving upon the turnout, just below the village, and when it was within ten feet of where it was to stop, McLaughlin stepped in between the engine and the first car to pull the shackle. He reached in with his left hand to pull the pin, and as he did so placed his left foot on the rails. It being near the switch there were two rails close together. His foot slipped between them and became wedged fast. The car struck him and threw him forward on his face and the forward truck passed partially over him, making a severe flesh wound on the lower part of his body and breaking the pelvis bone. The train was stopped before the hind truck reached him; he drew his foot away leaving his boot between the rails and arose and stood up until his associates could go to his aid. Two physicians were called and did what was possible to be done, advising his instant removal to his home. A priest was also called and administered the sacrament. The train was got ready and he was sent to Rutland as soon as possible, arriving about 10 o'clock. He exhibited a great deal of bravery, never uttering a groan or a word of complaint except to say his leg pained.

On the arrival of the train Doctors Allen and Hanrahan were called to attend him. His wounds were not nearly so severe as at first supposed, the physicians being of the opinion that there is a probability of his recovery. He was taken to his home on East Street, where he lay at last account making scarcely any complaint.

A COUPLE OF TRADES

Another raid upon the purveyors of the ardent, yesterday. Armed with the necessary documents, Deputy Sheriff Millington visited the saloon of James McLaughlin, on Wales street. Unlike the Irishman in the story who didn't mend his roof on pleasant days because it didn't need it and thought the weather was too bad to go out on rainy ones, Mr. McL was out on the roof attending to some matters there. The latch string hung hospitably out, and, entering, the officer proceeded to investigate the nature of the stock in trade. He found nothing that particularly struck his fancy except two bottle of whiskey. These he told the proprietor, who had just then entered, he guessed he would take, and, showing him his card, that he might come round to the office, if he wanted to, and he would settle with him, but the proprietor thought he needn't trouble himself.

Being joined by Policeman Crawford, he walked around to Washington street and visited Samuel Hayward. They were greeted cordially as they entered and asked if they had come to trade. They answered that perhaps they might if they could find what they wanted, and said they thought they would look around. They seemed hard to suit at first, but at last Millington thought that, as he was keeping a boarding house, perhaps he'd get some beans. There were a couple of barrels of nice ones there, and, as he was poking them over, he asked Hayward what he'd take for them. Hayward thought they weren't worth quite so much as they had been when he saw a jug pulled out, and the price of produce fell still farther when two more appeared. In spite of all their dicker they didn't make a trade, though those bareels are not as full as they were by the bulk of two jugs of whiskey and one of rum.

The Town Meeting

The town meeting was called to order a little after two yesterday afternoon, by M.G. Everts. Moderator. The meeting was pretty fully attended, a large number coming from West Rutland. The first business take up was the election of highway surveyors. The Moderator stated that the closing scenes of the last meeting had been marked by a good deal of disturbance, and that he wished to state at the very beginning that nothing of the kind would be permitted again: that any one attempting it would be at once arrested and made to suffer the full penalty of the law and that order must and would be maintained.

The meeting then proceeded to the election, the nomination for the West Rutland district, which had created the trouble in March, being left till the last. The following gentlemen are to serve the town during the next year as HIGHWAY SURVEYORS:
Patrick McLaughlin was one of 22 named.

The sour-smelling staves of the musty old rum barrel will, in future, miss the bewitching embrace of James McLaughlin; and the whiskey jug will forget his firm grip, as he twirled it aloft to pour the flowing flagon full. The sad and gloomy countenances and heavy eyes of his many customers will miss the seductive smile which played upon his lips as he reached for the hard-earned ten-cent scrip. But James has gone, and few respectable people will mourn. He left town quietly and peacefully, as though going on a visit to a dying friend. Rumor says the Vermont liquor law had something to do with his departure. Of this we know not; but whatever the cause, it certainly did Rutland a good turn, for which all good people will return devout thanks. While he remained with us, he could chew the plastic quid, measure out the sparkling Geneva, or flip the laborer's dime with the best of them. When the officers came around, he could twirl a barrel of ale or invert a flagon of whiskey with the utmost dexterity. But he has left town, and with this parting "send-off" we bid him adieu.

Burned Out
Sixteen Families and Ninety-one Persons Thrust into the Storm -
Not a Dollar Insured

A tenement house generally known as “Long (?) Sault,” in West Rutland, occupied by sixteen families, several of whom kept boarders, was discovered to be on fire shortly after half past ten Monday night. The fiercest wind and snow storm of the whole winter was raging and no less than ninety-one were roused from their beds and forced out into the blinding gale. The following is a list of the homeless families and their losses:

John Quinn – seven persons – lost nothing.
Peter Baker – twelve persons – lost about $240.
John Penders – nine persons – loss is trifling.
James Brown – six persons – lost all he had.
Archie Mercier – four persons – lost all but a few tools.
Eugene Lamoureux – two persons – lost about $50.
Louis Forgette – three persons – loss is nothing.
Charles Quinlin – four persons – loss is nothing.
Felix Forgette – four persons – loss about $50.
John Hartney – six persons – loss is some $25.
William Main – eight persons – lost everything, and said to have had $400 burned up in a trunk.
Duff Gennette – ten persons – saved his things.
Patrick McLaughlin – four persons – saved most of his things.
Fred Gillipo – five persons – lost most of his things.
Thomas Lynch – five persons – no loss.
Mike Foley – two persons – lost about $100.

The fire originated in the apartments occupied by John Quinn. John is a hard working man, but he has domestic troubles. Mrs. Quinn drinks and while John was a bed and asleep, Mrs. Quinn was said to be in a condition next to delirium from the use of drink, and is supposed to have accidentally set fire to the house. The fire once started, there was no possibility of preventing the destruction of the building.

The tenement house was built some 25 years ago and was 25 feet wide by 125 feet long, two stories high on the east side and two stories with a basement on the west side. It contained twenty-four tenement suites, twenty of which were occupied. The building was owned by Sheldons & Slason, and cost about $3000. It has yielded an aggregate income since it was built of some $15,000 – the tenants paying each family from $2.08 to $2.50 per month. It was uninsured though an agent recently offered to place $4000 insurance on it. The firm will rebuild the building soon.

The scene at the time of the fire was one which no one could describe, nor even “our special artist on the spot” delineate. The different nationalities of the homeless multitude; the jargon of Canada-French patois and the rich Irish brogue, and the howling wind which, sometimes dying partly down, could again be heard roaring in the distance as the gale approached. The winds drove the flames directly on the Catholic Church which seemed doomed. It actually did take fire in one place and the flames got quite a start on a small spot, but the driving snow extinguished it again. Several men were in the belfry and kept that from igniting. After the fire burned down several families moved their effects in the unfinished rear part of the church.

Monday Night’s Storm
The Heaviest Storm of the Winter-
Great Delay of Tralns-
Buildings Unroofed, etc.

"Euroclydon the storm wind" howled through western Vermont on Monday night, carrying devastation and blockade everywhere within its range. It began Monday evening and somewhat annoyed those people who were caught out of doors, turning and making sport of umbrellas and covering pedestrians with snow. The next morning what we were wont to call thoroughfares and sidewalks were drifts of moist snow waiting for a battle with snow shovels that had long lain idle. When the town awoke the battle was not nearly so general, nor so rigorous, as it should have been, many drifts yet lying where they were piled on the sidewalks undisturbed save by the feet of travelers brave enough to force a path through them. We learn of but little damage being done in the village. A small barn belonging to Mrs. McGuirek (McGuirk?) on Green street, was blown over: also a small barn belonging to Hiram Cheney, corner of Green and East streets, a window at the Bardwell hotel blew in about three o'clock, causing a limb of the law to arise at that unseasonable hour and prowl tremblingly around for a porter to repair the damages; A. C. Bates and Son's large new sign turned a somersault at the mandate of the storm, and a number of fences were blown down.

Several accidents are reported from around the village and neighboring towns. Oakley Gibson north of the village had the roof blown off from the L of his house; H. L. Gleason east of the village had a woodshed blown over and a chimney swept from his house; James Hayward, east of the village, had the roof lifted from a horse-barn; a horse-barn belonging to John McLaughlin, of Mendon, was blown over and two colts injured.

A Brutal Assault
A Man Knocked Down and Beaten in the Street at Eight O'clock in the Evening -
He Afterwards Disappears Very Mysteriously -
Arrest of One Assailant.

(Note: the mysterious victim in this article later proves to be a George McLaughlin. See May 22 article.)

A brutal fight occurred on West Street about eight o'clock Saturday evening. The man who was attacked disappeared in the darkness and it was currently reported on the street that evening that he had been murdered. No one who saw the affray recognized the man and no trace of him could be discovered. The matter caused a good deal of excitement on the street. Nothing has been since learned of the man or his whereabouts, although diligent search has been made. The fact that none of the physicians have been called on to dress his wounds would indicate that he was not so severely injured as at first supposed. Nathan Thomas, foreman in the lumber yard of D.M. White & Co., who lives a short distance above where the affray occurred made the following statement to a representative of THE GLOBE.

MR. THOMAS' STATEMENT

I was sitting on a neighbor's steps when I heard a cry from the vicinity of the Episcopal church. I thought it was a man laughing. The cry was repeated when I saw it was someone in trouble. I went to the spot and saw two men kicking and beating a third who lay on the ground, crying, "Let's finish him, d- -n him!" I called to them, "What are you doing here?" They stopped and replied "Nothing" and started up West street. The man staggered to his feet, covered with blood and sand, his nose and mouth streaming. I asked him what the matter was, and he said he was walking along quietly when these men came up and knocked him down. I did not wait to hear anymore but started on, calling to the crowd which had gathered, "Let's get those fellows; don't let's see such things going on." One tall, slim fellow whom I did not know, started and ran by me. The two assailants saw we were after them, when they picked up two stones and started. They turned into Church street, we following. They ran around a house on the right hand side, back into the street, across, and around a house there. We separated, I going one side and the rest the other. Back of the houses, i met one of the fellows, and he tried to fool me by pointing in between two of the houses and crying: "See there he goes. Let's follow him," and starting. "Yes," I answered, "here he goes right here," reaching around him and catching both wrists, "I want you to come with me." He was a heavy fellow, but I am middling cordy myself, and he came. I lead (sic) him around through Church and Wales streets to the Berwick House, where I met Watchman Alexander, who took charge of him, and he asked me to help him take him to jail. Every little way he would stop and brace himself and refuse to go on. Then I would put my knees behind him and persuade him the same way the old man persuaded the boys out of the orchard with a pitchfork, and at last we got him to jail.

(Note: this ends Mr. Thomas' statement, but the article continues on without making that clear.)

Being asked if he knew the man who had been hurt he replied that he did not, and did not ask his name or residence. He was confident he should know the man again. he was fully six feet high, rather thick set and weighing 160 or 165 pounds, dark complexioned. He did not remember whether he wore a hat or not. His face was gashed and nose and mouth bleeding.

Mrs. Thomas said the noise called her to the door, and while the party were up Church street, the injured man went limping up West street. No one followed him, and she didn't know where he went.

Varnum Whitcomb says that he was walking up West street behind four fellows, when suddenly one of them started ahead on the run, the others following. One of them struck this one who was ahead, knocking him down, and ran off into Wales street.

Miss Laura Prier (or Prior), who as passing up West street, saw one of the men knock another down and run through Wales street.

The man who was arrested proved to be Michael Heiher, a West Rutland rough who has resided in the hotel de Millington (note: comic term for ‘jail') most of the time for the last eight months for participation in a drunken row. He enjoyed a few breaths of fresh air at the time of the Paton murder trial, being brought out to testify to what Paton and other parties confined in jail had told him during their imprisonment. After the trial he was returned and remained till last Tuesday when his excellency the governor saw fit to pardon him. In the four days of his liberty he has made excellent use of his time, getting returned to that domicile in such a shape that he will not probably soon leave it. He stated after his arrest that he had been walking with a friend of his when a stranger came along and got into a fight with his friend. He attempted to separate them. This story is decidely thin when one considers that he took the trouble to pick up a stone and run up Church street and around two houses with his friend after he got them separated.

The disappearance of the injured man is the most mysterious part of the affair, and leads to the conclusion that the four were chums on a spree, and that he is keeping still for the sake of helping his friends out of trouble. Nothing as to the extent of his injuries is known, though several persons say there were gashes on his face when he got up, and that he walked off with difficulty. This case shows how dangerous a class there is in the community, and would seem to illustrate the need there is for two night watchmen.

McLaughlin testifies that he was walking along West street with a pail when these three fellows, none of whom he knew, came along and asked for a drink from his pail. He refused and they knocked him down. He and Heiher both refused to tell who any of the party were.

Refreshments are furnished under the supervision of Miss O. C. Felt. Mrs. James Russell, and Mrs. J. Butterfly have charge of the tables containing articles for sale. Those To Assist In Tag Day -
Funds Will Go To Providence Orphan Asylum -
Burlington Institution is Entirely Supported By Aims and is at Present Caring For Over 300 People - Conducted By Sisters of Charity

Tomorrow will be observed as tag day by the Providence Orphan Asylum, and those who are inclined to help the institution and its work of taking care of abandoned children and aged people without means will be suitably tagged by a large number of young women who have offered their services for the cause. This institution, founded by the late Bishop De Goesbriand 59 years ago, has done untold good throughout the state and is at the present time caring for over 258 children who otherwise would be thrown upon the public; as well as 47 aged people who are without any means of support.

All the funds which go to maintain the institution consist of alms and this is the first time that a direct appeal has been made to the public at large in this city. The asylum has carried on its work in a quiet way so that few have realized the magnitude of the good that has been done.

Tomorrow will, however, offer an opportunity to help the work and it will probably be taken advantage of by the people of Rutland, who will then be given a chance to show their usual generosity. Tags of different sizes will be given out denoting the amount of contributions, 10 cents, 25 cents, 50 cents, and $1 or over.

A list of the young women with their chaperones who will solicit funds tomorrow follows:-

Edward McCue of Rutland died at the Sargent house on Court street at about six o'clock Monday evening, aged about 75 years. Mr. McCue arrived in town on the 4:55 train from the north Saturday evening, after having been on a visit to a daughter in Canada. He was ill when he arrived here and Dr. P. L. The remains were taken to Rutland on the mail train Tuesday morning, accompanied by the son. Mr. McCue was a native of Ireland, and spent the most of his life in Middlebury, removing to Rutland with his family about 24 years ago. VICTIM OF STABBING LIKELY TO RECOVER
Calvin Rich, a Civil War Veteran, Held for Assaulting J. McLaughlin

Calvin Rich, a veteran of the Civil war, is in the county jail on a warrant charging assault with intent to kill while John McLaughlin, 25 years old, a lumberman, is at the Rutland hospital suffering from three stab wounds in the vital parts of his body as the result of a fight in the Rich home during the night Friday night or early Saturday morning, the officers receiving the call at 3 o'clock in the morning. Harvey Ranger, son of the late James Ranger of Mendon, is also confined in the jail, being held by the state authorities as an important witness. McLaughlin's condition was considerably improved last night.

State's Attorney C. V. Poulin, together with Grand Jurer Charles E. Novak, Deputy Sheriff Henry R. Adams and Policeman Martin Kennedy were on the grounds as soon as possible after the call was received by telephone, the Rich home being located about six miles from the city. It is understood that State's Attorney Poulin has a complete story of the affair from Ranger and Rich, but McLaughlin was so weak from the loss of blood that he was unable to tell any coherent story, fainting several times while being brought to this city.

McLaughlin Aggressor Says Rich

It is understood that Rich, who is 70 years of age and who lives alone on the main highway between this city and Woodstock, was attempting to persuade McLaughlin to go to bed when the younger man attacked Rich who went into another room, obtained a knife and stabbed McLaughlin in the back two or three times.

It was several hours later that the officers arrived at the Rich home, McLaughlin in the meantime lying on the kitchen floor in a large pool of blood, unable to arise and with no medical attendance. He was brought to the house of correction and later removed to the hospital where at a late hour last night his condition was said to be considerably improved.

Men Had Been Drinking

Just what time the trouble occurred is not known, but it is supposed to have happened about 11 o'clock at night. In the afternoon, Ranger and McLaughlin, who work in a lumber camp east of the city, came to Rutland and when they started towards home they were armed with some drinkables. After stopping at the home of Mr. Rich the men had several drinks, all participating, and finally Ranger went upstairs to bed.

Rich Goes for Knife

Rich and McLaughlin stayed up and were talking in the kitchen when it was finally suggested by Rich that the men go to bed and McLaughlin strenuously objected. According to Rich's story, the younger man attacked him. Rich being a much older man and physically much smaller than McLaughlin, he went to another room which Rich calls his "armory" and there he obtained a long-bladed hunting knife.

Stabs Him Three Times

He returned to the room and stabbed McLaughlin in the back two or three times, he does not remember which. The blade entered the first time a few inches above the pelvic bone a short distance from the spine and the other two wounds were on the same side but just under the shoulder blade.

Luckily none of the vital organs were pierced, but the wounds were deep and because of the fact that the man lay without medical aid for four or five hours he lost a great amount of blood, his clothes being soaked.

Rutland Officers Notified

After he saw what he had done, Rich awoke Ranger and the latter went to a neighboring farm and the local police station was notified. Deputy Sheriff Adams and State's Attorney Poulin went by sleigh to the scene, and Ranger and Rich were arrested, while McLaughlin was brought to Rutland and medical aid summoned. He is in charge of Dr. F.H. Gebhardt and Dr. William Stickney.

The room which Rich calls his armory is equipped with guns, swords, knives and revolvers. He is a bachelor.

RICH HELD IN $1500 BAIL FOR ASSAULT

Bail of $1500 was fixed in the case of state against Calvin Rich of Mendon who was arraigned before Judge F. G. Swinnerton in City court yesterday afternoon on a charge of assault with intent to kill, Rich being implicated in the assault Friday night on John McLaughlin at the former's home in Mendon, about six miles from this city. Bail had not been furnished up to last night. State's Attorney C.V. Poulin, who appeared for the state, told Judge Swinerton that the physicians attending the injured man, who was stabbed three times in the back, expected he would recover, unless complications developed.

Harvey Ranger. who was at the Rich home at the time of the trouble and who has since been confined in the county jail as an important witness, was arraigned yesterday afternoon on a charge of intoxication, second offense. He pleaded guilty and he was given until today in which to pay the fine and costs amounting to about $26.50. Ranger promised to appear before the grand jury which convenes in this city in two weeks to testify in the case against Rich.

The trouble for which the men were arrested happened late last Friday night at the Rich home on the road to Woodstock and is supposed to have been caused by McLaughlin's refusing to go to bed. According to the story obtained by the county officials, the three men had been drinking and Ranger had retired.

After talking for several hours, Rich suggested to McLaughlin that he go to bed and it is understood that Rich will claim that McLaughlin attacked him and in self-defense he ran into another room, obtained a long-bladed hunting knife and returning stabbed McLaughlin three times in the back. These wounds were four and a half, two and a half and one and a half inches in length, respectively, and the man lost a great quantity of blood before assistance arrived, but it is expected he will recover.

McLaughlin to be Arrested

A warrant has been issued against McLaughlin and will be served when he recovers sufficiently to be able to appear in court. He will be charged with intoxication and there is a possibility that this charge may be amplified with a more serious charge.

Although the wounds inflicted by Rich on McLaughlin were deep, the knife did not penetrate any vital organ.

Rich, who is a veteran of the Civil war, has always borne a good reputation in the town of Mendon. He is a lister, has served the town as an auditor and he has served on petit juries in Rutland County court. he has retained attorney Joseph C. Jones as counsel.

Patrick McLaughlin had a narrow escape from death at the Rooney lumber camp in Mendon, when he was tumbled over an embankment and rolled for 40 or 50 feet, striking stumps and rocks on the way down. He received several fractured ribs. He was riding up a steep incline on a set of bobs drawn by a pair of horses. Without warning, the horses starting backing, the sleds went into the side of the road, and Mr. McLaughlin fell off.

Rutland Printers Returning from Convention Injured When Car Goes Over Bank Middlebury, June 29 – Four persons who had been attending the New England Typographical Union’s 11th annual convention at Burlington yesterday and today were pinned beneath the automobile of Mial Fiske of Rutland when the car went over a five-foot embankment a mile south of the village of East Middlebury about nine to-night.

Those in the party were Mr. Fiske, Miss Elizabeth E. McLaughlin [identified in a previous article as Miss E. C. McLaughlin], first vice-president of the union, a cousin of Miss McLaughlin, all of Rutland, and Miss Watson, a delegate to the convention from Meriden, Conn. One of the ladies escaped injury, but the others were badly cut and bruised, being brought to the office of Sr. S. S. Eddy in this village by Earl Tracy of Brandon, who drove along after the accident. They were taken to-night on the sleeper to the Rutland. Their car, which was owned and driven by Mr. Fiske, was badly smashed.

The accident occurred when they were approaching a car with only one light. Not knowing whether that light was on the left or right of the machine, Mr. Fiske turned well to the right with the result that his car went over the embankment and overturned.
