Compare and contrast the opposing views of the Cold War from the Soviet and U.S. standpoints.

Historical Background

Following the Allies’ victory in World War II, Europe entered a period of economic turmoil. Joseph Stalin and the Soviet Union found this to be a perfect opportunity to spread Communism throughout Europe and the rest of the world. However, Harry S. Truman and the U.S. with their own Democratic ideals tried to prevent the Soviet spread of Communism. This lead to many confrontations and the constant threat of war as both sides entered a massive arms race. Eventually, war was not waged as the Soviet Union collapsed.
