A small lesson in magic

A few days had past since Hyacintch found her cherished village burned to nothing more than ashes and began her travel back to Zayas, a human town on the outskirts of the forest. After the horrible attack, Hyacintch had returned from running her errands. It was along the way back to Zayas that she met up with Tehlko, a mischevous elven thief who'd known Hyacintch since childhood. Always the one to start a new adventure or eager to discover treasure, which unfortunately happened to be owned by some other poor soul at the time, his eyes were eternally lit with a cunning glow. Tehlko was smart and it was his mixture of intelligence and curiousity that earned him the title of "pest". Hyacintch had to admit Tehlko did have nice eyes. She had no idea why he would shroud them now below that hood of his which always covered his face to just above his nose, letting only a portion of his eyes visible. Hyacintch humphed once. Doesn't surprise me, she thought to herself, that the only part of him that could possibly be considered nice would be hidden by him. All the elven girl could see in him she didn't like.
All except those eyes

"What are you staring at already?" Tehlko looked at Hyacintch for an answer as they kept walking "Is the fact that im broke amusing to you?"

"No i dont think so...and by the way i'm not staring at anything ka'muh" she replied with a grin

"Stop calling me that little girl...I hate fairies..." Tehlko kepted his eyes foward. Ka'muh ment Fairy in the elven language at Quintanas.

"But it suits you perfectly! After all you are the chosen jester of the fairies aren't you??" Hyacintch put her hands behind her back and walked a few feet infront of Tehlko as she finished, still grinning.

The elven pickpocket shrugged. "For someone who who claims to be a grown woman you act like a small spoiled girl. You even walk like one."

"I do not!!"

Tehlko grinnned slightly under his hood. "Do too" He simply answered.

"DO NOT!!" Hya's face flushed a bright red as she defiantly stated how grown up she was. Althought her childish manner of answer favored her not. "Leave me alone ka'muh!"

Tehlko stopped and looked up slightly so that his eyes were directly on Hya's. Hyacintch stopped dead in her tracks as she gazed back into his eyes. She could slightly see the mischevous glint in them. "Mark my words little girl," Tehlko spoke through a clenched teeth grin "you WILL regret calling me that name....."

"Oh? and what exactly are you planning on doing? Leave me alone to walk by myself the rest of the way? At this point I think you would be doing me a favor"

The pickpocket's only answer to her was a silent grin.

The two elves kept walking through the day expecting nothing else to interrupt their horrible relatioship and kind of depressed because of the fact. Soon, they both came to a small clearing in the forest about fifty meters in width from one end to the other. It was a grass circle with a red rosed edge. The sun shone through the tree tops into the clearing almost magically and made the small pasture a beautiful and peaceful sight. Hya smiled and ran into the pasture giggling the whole way. Tehlko, being left behind as he prefered to walk still, couldn't help but smile as he saw Hya's energetic outburst. He couldn't complain. After hours of hearing her constant nagging it was good to see she actually had an appealing side. He still thought she was a little girl though.

Hya crouched down in the circle and started to caress the rose petals from within the pasture. She smiled and hummed softly to herself as she tried to speak to the rose. Tehlko was nearing the edge of the circle while he looked up and around the place and wondered how strange it was to find such a spot. The treetops were open amazingly so that the circle around the edges of them coincided perfectly with the edges of the pasture. It was certainly a fluke for a clearing to have developed naturally into this.

Just as Tehlko was about to touch the inside of the grassy heaven, he looked down and noticed one single black rose among all the other red. His expression changed radically from one of tranquility to a look of dread.

"HYA!! Get out of their no....!"

A brilliant light beam emerged from the bottom of the grassy pasture and seemed to go up into the sky about a mile high. Hyacintch got up with a frigthened expression on her face and dropped the rose she had accidently yanked from the ground as she started up. The rose disappeared just as it touched the dirt.

"Damn!!" a small shrill voice called out from nowhere "and i was so close too to nabbing yas too! Why you have to go and yell at her! Why you not jus' step inside circle!? Dag nabbit! Now Edgar's fun over! Cause of you stupid el'th!"

Tehlko looked all around to every treetop, stopping for no less than a second and still capable of taking in everything with his carefully trainned thief eyes. "Well im sorry...Edgar is it? Im sorry to have ruined your fun Edgar but i dont see whats so funny about trapping two poor people like us in that seal there. Of course, if you still want to catch me you can come out and try to trick me into going into the circle" Tehlko kepted searching the whole time he spoke knowing full well no one would be stupid enough to come out and try to catc...

"HA! I know! Edgar a smarty! Edgar trick stupid el'th to get in circle ...haha! Here Edgar go!"

Then again, Tehlko thought, i could be wrong.

A small purple spot emerged from one of the beautiful trees that surrounded the seal where Hya was held. Immediately after the purple sphere left the tree trunk, the tree's appearance become old and it resembled a tree that would have been dead for many years. No leaves and bark almost black and charred, it gave Tehlko an idea of what he was dealing with.

"...great...a gogglebump..." the elf said to himself with a bitter taste in his mouth.

Gogglebumps were cousins to fairies. Being the same in size, that is practically the only thing the have in common. Fairies are born with either a golden, silver, white or clear skin color and glow around them while gogglebumps have no apparent glow around their bodies expect for when flying in their sphere form and come with black, purple or greenish brown skin colors. Fairies and gogglebumps live in different places also. While fairies prefer the confort of a nice tree trunk in a lush green forest, gogglebumps like to make their homes in swampland's dead tree trunks. Fairies inherrited the smarts of the family tree and left gogglebumps with what you could call the leftovers; so if fairies are mischevous, gogglebumps are just plain and simply horribly annoying. Its no wonder fairies and their cousins get along so well when playing pranks on travellers. Although some people compare gogglebumps and fairies to elves and their cursed brethen the qua'phos, or dark elf, gogglebumps aren't really harmful. Just a bit eccentric.

The small purple orb floated down till it was at height with Telhko's eyes. A small burst of purple light boomed and there stood the three inch gogglebump. He had a round purple belly and a cunning smile. He wore a small purple hat on his round purple head. Edgar looked at Hyacintch behind the blue light walls of the barrier.

"No funny stuff el'th! Not even you guys can jump high enough to jump over that wall there" he pointed to the seal as if no one would know which wall he spoke of "and you can't call your spirit buddies either. So nhaa!" Edgar stuck his tounge out at Hya and for no reason she grew red and stuck hers right back out at him.

Tehlko shook his head and then cleared his throat. Edgar cocked his head in Tehlko's direction, his tounge still out and looked at him with an expression that seemed surprise to see him there. As if it was the first time he was looking at Tehlko. The thief took his hood off and grinned at the gogglebump. "Lets make a deal" is all he said.

"Edgar no deal with stupid el'th! You el'th people think you smarty all the time! Well now look at your el'th girly! She trapped by ME!" Edgar smiled in a conformed way happy with his mayor victory though he didn't get both elves.

"Yes i do see" Tehlko's eyes glinted with mischief once more and Hya fell back on the grass mumbeling to herself something that sounded like oh no "Thats why i know you will like this deal" Tehlko continued "Because you are so smart and good looking too"

"Sorry, i got a girlfriend"

"Of course," Tehlko tried to contain a chuckle "now to business"

Edgar floated down onto a near by tree branch and sat there with his legs crossed wondering what this intelligent elf, intelligent because he can spot other intelligent people such as himself, had to offer.

"Now tell me Edgar. Why trap people?"

"Cause!" Edgar tried to seem sincere in his negotiation with the pickpocket. He thought he was one of the best negotiators to ever live after all the last time he had negotiated anything was to get the other half from Crom's cookie; one of his gogglebump friend. "People mean!" he continued "Edgar try to get food for family. Family have three stomachs!" he held up two fingers "we gogglebumps need to eat!"

"Well i think we can deal with that" Tehlko pulled out a small pouch and took out two silver coins "This here will buy you food for the next week or so. I'll give you them and you let her go. Deal?"

Edgar put on his best poker face for a moment, then grinned.

"DEAL!!" and with that the seal came down and Tehlko placed the two silvers in Edgars small two hands.

"Dont spend it all in one place now you hear?" Tehlko told him

Edgar floated back into the dead trunk waving his little hand as he did and yelled into the tree "Hey Crom! Look what i got!!"

Telhko shrugged finally "If there is anything i hate more than fairies...its gogglebumps..."

Hyacintch walked up to Telhko and stared at him a moment. "I thought you said you didn't have any money..?"

"I dont" Tehlko gave her the poach "Here this is yours"

"WHAT!?" Hyacintch's face flushed once again

"I told you i'd make you eat those words"....
