A study of the origins of Bonpo Dzogchen in Western Tibet and Central Asia with translations of the principal texts. The Zhang-zhung Nyan-gyud,"the Oral Tradition from Zhang-zhung," represents a continuous uninterrupted transmission of the Dzogchen teachings from the Primordial Buddha Kuntu Zangpo down to the present day. The Way of the Garuda: Tibetan Shamanism, Nature Spirits, and Healing the Earth

A popular presentation of pre-Buddhist Tibetan Shamanism and its relationship both to Tantric Buddhism and Yungdrung Bon. Vidydhara Publications and the Vidyadhara Institute (its library) was established by myself in 1996 in San Diego specifically to organize and conduct my research into Dzogchen and Vajrayana Buddhism generally and to promote the translating of relavent original Tibetan texts. In addition, the institute focuses on my research into the History of Religions, Mysticism, and Esoteric Traditions, and promotes the publication of monographs of comparative studies in these areas. The Simhanada Series: In the past I have printed and distributed a number of translations of Tibetan Buddhist texts belonging to the Nyingmapa and Kagyudpa traditions for limited circulation among practitioners. In 1978 this process expanded with the publication of The Alchemy of Realization, Tibetan Astrological Almanac and Calendar 1978, The New Treasures of Dudjom, The Adamantine Essence of Life, The Secret Book of Simhamukha, and others. Now a number of these early publications and manuscripts have been edited and revised and will be made available in the future in new editions with introductions and notes. A list of these publications will be forthcoming in the future.

The Vidyadhara Series: This is a published series of mongraphs, and sometimes edited transcripts of some of my lectures and courses (mainly in Europe), focusing on comparative studies in Mysticism, Religion, Mythology, and Esoteric Traditions generally. This series explores the similarities, but also the differences, among the various religious, mystical, and mythological traditions of humanity. There is also an emphasis on the increasing dialogue now occuring at the threshold of the 21st Century among the religions of the world.

The Garuda Series: A series of monographs focusing on Tibetan shamanism and dealing with such topics as the Cult of the Guardian Deities, rituals for the nature spirits, the personal energy field of the individual and its protection, healing and recalling the soul, soul travel, and so on. Some of these are edited transcripts of lectures and workshops given in Europe and elsewhere.

The Nagaraja Series: A series of monographs on serpent and chthonic symbolism, mythology generally in relation to depth psychology, and comparative studies of ritual and magic relating to the spirits of the earth.

A comparative study of the Wicca of Gerald Gardner and Western ceremonial magic with Vajrayana and Indian Tantra generally. The origin of Wicca is seen as lying in the universal archetypes of the Great Goiddess and the Horned God which appear in the Higher Tantras of Vajrayana Buddhism as the Dakini and the Heruka. This is an edited transcript of a series of lectures. $20 plus handling and postage.

BONPO TRANSLATION PROJECT

The Bonpo Translation Project and Bonpo Research Foundation is a division of the Vidyadhara Institute and the editions below are published by Vidyadhara Publications.

1. Yungdrung Bon - The Eternal Tradition by John Myrdhin Reynolds (1991).
This edition contains an introduction to the Bon tradition, as well as material relating to the mythological origins of Bon and the mysterious Central Asian land of Olmo Lung-ring, otherwise known as Shambhala, together a brief biography of the Central Asian Buddha Tonpa Shenrab, the reputed historical founder of Bon. An appendix is included giving an outline of the teachings of Bon in terms of Sutra, Tantra, and Dzogchen, translated from the Tibetan of Lopon Tenzin Namdak. This edition is the first part of a more comprehensive work, a popular presentation of the Bon tradition, to be published in the future. 61 pp. $15

 2. Bonpo Dzogchen Teachings according to Lopon Tenzin Namdak, transcribed and edited by John Myrdhin Reynolds (1992).
These teachings pertaining to Sutra, Tantra, and Dzogchen according to the Old Bon tradition were presented in a number of seminars and retreats by Lopon Tenzin Namdak during his visits to Europe and America in 1991. The Lopon, the greatest living Bonpo scholar outside of Tibet, discusses in some detail the philosophical views of Madhyamaka, Chittamatra, and Mahamudra in relation to Dzogchen. 92 pp. $20.

Translations from the Zhang-zhung Nyan-gyud Cycle of Dzogchen: 

3. Selections from the Bonpo Book of the Dead, with translations, introduction, and commentaries by John Myrdhin Reynolds (1998).
This volume presents translations of a number of texts from the Zhang-zhung Nyan-gyud dealing with the Bardo or the after-death experience in the intermediate state from the viewpoint of Dzogchen. The commentaries by the translator elucidate many important points in the translations. Comparisons are made of the Dzogchen tradition of the visions of Nirvana and Samsara with the eschatologies and mysticisms found in other spiritual traditions. 118 pp. $20.

4. The Guru Yoga for Tapihritsa and the Preliminary Practices of the Zhang-zhung Nyan-gyud, with translations, introduction, commentaries, and notes by John Myrdhin Reynolds (1999).
Guru Yoga is the most important foundational practice in both Dzogchen and Tantra. A translation of "the Invocation for Tapihritsa," the principal master in the Zhang-zhung snyan-rgyud lineage who attained the Rainbow Body, is provided here, together with a translation and commentary on the Bon spyod dgu rim, the preliminary practice text from the rGyal-ba phyag-khrid, the practice manual for this Dzogchen system. There is an Appendix dealing with Guardian practice. 112 pp. $20

Practice Texts: These editions of translations that pertain to practice are meant for limited circulation only among interested practitioners of the Dharma. Apart from the philosophical view, the actual practice of the Bon tradition, whether Dzogchen or Tantra, first requires transmission from a competent Bonpo Lama.
