The Seventh Grader

“Just look how short
They are,” they smirk.
Around each corner
They seem to lurk.

The high school kids!
Grades nine through twelve
Believe we should be kept
On shelves.

If they were sharks, well,
We’d be guppies.
If they were Dobermans--
We’d all be puppies.

If we get lost,
It’s baby talk:
“Do you need your Mommy?”
They love to mock.

We’d like to say,
“Hey! Don’t be cruel!
“Don’t make us scared to
“Come to school!”

“ ’Cause five years ago--
“Or even two--
“That pitiful seventh grader
“Was you.”
