Freeman Blitzes Field; M. Shumaker Holds On for Win

Former National Champion, Darryl Freeman, shot a final round 22 in increasingly difficult playing conditions to blow by 2-round leader, Brad Lebo, and capture his first victory of the season on Richmond's course #3. Freeman shot rounds of 25-26-22, a 3-round total of 73, 35 under par, 4 better than Rick Baird and 5 better than Dave Taylor, Kevin Garrett, and Brad Lebo. The field consisted of 25 pros with 13 money spots, ending with a 3-way split of the final two cash spots at 82, 26 under par. In the APA division, Malcolm Shumaker held on for the victory over a surging Jonathan Moore. Shumaker entered the third round at 50, five strokes ahead of Moore, but found the puddle-forming course difficult in the final round as he shot 30, while more shot 26. The 1999 VAAPA State Champion, shot rounds of 24-26-30, a 3-round total of 80, 28 under par, to win by one over Moore and 3 strokes ahead of Chuck Cyr, Paul Lowery, and Liz Shumaker. Five of the 15 APA's cashed, with last cash being 83.

D. Taylor Wins in Playoff; Moore Victorious in Pete Staylor Memorial

On a damp, cold, and cloudy Saturday in Richmond, Dave Taylor's barage of 25's was good enough to get him into a playoff with Darrell Anderson, where he eventually won. Taylor and Anderson's 75, 33 under par, was one better than Vince Batten and two ahead of Darryl Freeman. Twelve players took home cash out of the 25 man field. Last cash went to 5 players who shot 79. In the APA field, Jonathan Moore captured his second VAAPA State tournament with a strong showing, shooting 25-25-23, a 3-round total of 73, 35 under par. Moore finished 7 strokes ahead of Amy Smith, Liz Shuamker, and Wayne Saunders. Five of the 15 APA players cashed, with the last money spot going to Doug Gurney at 82. The tournament was held in memory of the late Pete Staylor, a local APA player who always brought out the best in others. His wife, Jean, and his daughter and granddaughter were in attendance for the dedication.
