Feng Shui Terms

Ch’i- energy or life force of all living things

Cycle of Destruction- elements arranged so that each element overpowers and dominates the element that follows it in the cycle; fire melts metal, metal destroys wood, wood drains from the earth, earth dams water, water puts out fire

Cycle of Production-elements arranged so that each element helps to create and support the element that follows it in the cycle; fire produces earth, earth produces metal, metal liquefies (symbolizing water) water creates wood, wood creates fire

Elements-
Fire: color-red; direction-south; dynamic, inspiring, understanding, motivating, enthusiastic, intelligent. Fire shaped buildings contain a lot of sharp angles (triangular, A-frame)
Earth: color-yellow; direction-center; reliable, sincere, dependable, loyal, kind, responsible, solid, stable, nurturing, helpful. Earth shaped buildings are square and squat
Metal: color-white, gold; direction-west; abundance, material success, clear thinking, attention to detail, aesthetic. Rounded and curved buildings
Water: color- black, blue; direction-north; social activity, communication, wisdom, intuitiveness, sensitivity, spiritual, enjoy learning. Shapeless buildings
Wood: color- green; direction-east; creative, nourishing, family-minded, flexible, growth, challenges. High-rise buildings, many floors

Feng Shui- the art of living in harmony with the earth; literal translation: wind & water

Pa-kua- eight-sided symbol used as a protective talisman; used in rooms to help create the best furniture placements

Shars-straight lines of negative energy, potential bad luck & misfortune

Yin & Yang- represents the two opposites in Taoist philosophy, complementary, cannot exist independently
