Safety on the Internet
The Internet is an important part of everyday life for more and more of us. Adults and youngsters are using the world wide web as a resource for school work, to exchange ideas, for shopping and banking and for entertainment. The Internet has literally put the world at out finger tips. We must remember that the same dangers that can threaten us in the 'real world' are also waiting on the Internet. Those who would do us harm are using the advantages of technology for their benefit as well.
We can still enjoy our experiences on the World Wide Web, but must use safety precautions just as we do in 'real life'. These precautions can help us protect ourselves from crimes such as theft from our credit card and bank accounts to violent crimes. Parents should review Internet safety with their children and teens. They should ALWAYS monitor their children's activity on the 'Web'. Know where your child is 'surfing' and be sure to check it out for safety. There are programs available to keep children off SOME dangerous sites, but every site should be checked before children are allowed free access. At the bottom of this page are some links to other sites that will help you 'SURF SAFE'.
The first line of defense is anonymity. Use the same precautions you would use with an unsolicited telephone call. NEVER give your credit card number, bank account number, name, telephone number, address or any other personal information over the Internet unless YOU have initiated the contact and it is with a source you KNOW to be safe. ONLY give this information over a SECURE server. You will know it is a secure server because your computer will alert you to the fact that you are about to begin transmitting over a secure line. While this is not a 100% guarantee, it is a safety precaution.
Children should be instructed NEVER to give their name, address, phone number, school, or even town to strangers they meet on the Internet. Child predators can pose as children themselves to gain confidence and friendship, even sending fake pictures to trick victims into giving away information and / or meeting them. Even information which seems insignificant can be used by a predator to 'zero in' on a child. To read an example of how predators can track down a victim, click HERE.
While friendships can develop with 'chat buddies' we must remember that these are 'cyber' friendships and are often best left on the computer. NEVER have a meeting with a chat friend without a parent with you, and ALWAYS in a safe, PUBLIC place. Even adults should follow these rules.
The World Wide Web has opened up the world for everyone. It is here to stay, and enriches our lives in many positive ways. With a little precaution, everyone can enjoy it's benefits SAFELY.
