SOCIALIZATION PERIOD (4-10 WEEKS)

This period has the greatest effect on the puppy's reactions to humans. THIS IS A CRITICAL PERIOD. THIS PERIOD CAN AFFECT A PUPPY FOR ITS ENTIRE LIFE. The time for each puppy may differ. But between these weeks a mold can be made for life. They learn things from their mother and from humans, and these interactions are very important to how they handle situations in later life. This is a time when a litter of puppies can be heard chasing, chewing and yes, fighting with their littermates. Now, don't be alarmed, this is good for their future social behavior. They are learning motor skills, social behavior and how to handle situations that will come up later in life. You ask, "how?" Well, the biting results in being told off, and this teaches the puppies to handle other animals in later life by not doing the same. Likewise with the chasing. They are also learning how to live together in harmony and this helps in a multiple animal home. Otherwise, these puppies in later life respond aggressively to other animals.

The relationship with humans also enables the puppy not to fear humans and what is going to happen to them. The quality of time is the most important during this period. Not the amount of time. Puppies should be held, cuddled and their bodies stroked and they should be made to roll over and have their tummies stroked. If a puppy at this age will not allow you to handle it in this manner, patiently work with it, as this can be critical to adult behavior. Nobody wants to live with an aggressive or overly fearful animal. If you have a cat or two at this time, the puppy will interact with the cat and this will help as an adult dog too. If you have a handicapped person in your family, this is the time for interaction. These lessons are time well spent in the long life of this puppy. Puppies, like children, have to be taught fear and this is the stage where everything is critical. Puppies that are not exposed to humans before 12 weeks of age may always be fearful of human interaction.

Got some good news today about one of my pups. 1/20/2007 Soft Maple Wind on Water ADC, VAADC, VMGDC, CGN, competed at his first agility trial in 15 months, the K-9 Cliffhangers trial in Cloverdale, B.C. first run of the day he got a Q (and a 1st place) in Veteran's Advanced Titling, which was his third Q in Advanced so he earned his Veteran Advanced Agility Dog of Canada (VAADC) title!

As soon as he finished that run he and Sheila had to rush over to the other ring and run Master's Gamblers. He Q'd in that run as well, and since that was his third Master Gamblers Q, he earned his Veteran Master Gamblers Dog of Canada (VMGDC) title! Two titles in 4 minutes!!

To see how great I think this is... check out the link below

Against the Odds

The pups are starting to play with each other. Waking up, crawling on and biting each others ears. Little puppy growls. They are also more aware of what is going on around them in the puppy room.

then they flop back down to sleep

The pups got visitors this afternoon, so they got held a lot!

White Spot boy, & Black Boy

The pups heads will change a lot as they grow. Already they have changed so now they look more like little dogs, and not squished up old men's faces. ;-)

White Spot boy

Head
The head is a longer-than-wide wedge, readily distinguishable from that of all other retriever breeds, and of a size in balance with the body. Length of foreface is equal, or nearly equal, to length of backskull and, when viewed in profile, the planes are parallel. The stop is shallow and sloping. At the point of joining, the width of foreface may be slightly less than the width of the backskull but blending of the two should be smooth. The head has a nearly straight, continuous taper to the nose and is clean cut, not coarse, blocky or cheeky. Expression--Intelligent and alert. Eyes--Almond-shaped, rather large but not too prominent. Black or brown in black dogs and brown or amber in liver dogs. Harsh yellow eyes and loose haws are undesirable. Ears-- Rather small, set on a line slightly above the corner of the eye, and lying close to the head. Backskull--Flat or nearly flat. Foreface--Muzzle is wedge-shaped with no hint of snipiness. The taper ends mildly, neither acutely pointed nor bluntly squared-off but rather slightly rounding at the bottom. Mouth is level and never wry. Jaws are long and strong. A scissors bite is preferred. Teeth set straight and even. The lips are tight and clean, not pendulous. The nose is fully pigmented; black on black dogs, brown on liver dogs. Nostrils are large.

When I change the whelping box pads and blankets, I put the pups on one of Seger's dog beds with their toys. Up until now they just cuddled on Seger's bed, but now they are more aware of their surroundings.

Off the dog bed, and trying to see what I am up to

Trying to get over the side of the upturned whelping box

We worm the puppies. Even though Seger’s stools were checked, and she was parasite free prior to breeding, I assume that the pups have worms. Roundworm larvae will encyst in body tissue of adult bitches and activate during the last stages of pregnancy to infest puppies. So even though Seger did not have worms, and the pups have not been around any other dogs, they have a good chance of having worms. Since Seger cleans up after the puppies, she also must be treated.

Worming should start at about 3 weeks. Worming needs to be repeated at 4, 6, 8 and 10 weeks. . The first treatment kills any adult worms. The second treatment kills any new worms that may have hatched after the initial treatment. Once the puppies go to their new homes, the pups new veterinarian will take over the worming schedule. It may be necessary at this time to bring in stool samples for analysis.

The pups like the taste of it, and suck it right out of the dropper!

The pups get their first taste of puppy mush

For the first meal, I soaked a little bit of puppy food overnight. Mixed it with evaporated milk, yogurt, prozyme, and Gerber rice baby cereal.

Seger gets to clean up the rest
