Chapter Twelve

Somehow, the show went on without a problem. The Backstreet Boys performed while squirting people with water from Super Soakers to keep some of the heat down and the dancers took mandatory water breaks between songs. Even when Nick nailed Mackenzie with a stream of water right in the middle of a song and Mackenzie screamed, the show seemed almost perfect. All of the group seemed to be amazed that signs of “Congratulations” and “Good Luck” were being waved for Mackenzie and Nick. “Never again,” Rebecca was saying over and over to Kevin as the group exited the stage hallway. “Never.”

Mackenzie looked over at Rebecca worriedly. She noticed that Rebecca was showing intense signs of dehydration. Quickly, she jogged past Nick and Brian to Kevin and tapped him on the shoulder. When he turned around, Mackenzie felt the mom-instinct insider her click in. “Make sure that Rebecca gets water,” she was instructing.

“I will Mac, don’t worry.” Kevin and Mackenzie look at each other and began laughed a little together realizing that they were both strict parents at heart.

Nick walked into Mackenzie’s dressing room and found Mackenzie talking with Eve. When the girls saw Nick, they shut up immediately. “What?” Nick asked, a little perplexed.

“Girl talk Nick,” Mackenzie laughed. “Nothing that concerns you.”

Nick sat down behind Mackenzie and allowed for her to lean against his stomach. Mackenzie turned her head and shared a kiss with Nick before returning her attention to Eve.

“What do you think that I should do?” Eve was asking.

“What if we get a guy’s opinion?” Mackenzie asked. Eve nodded. “Nick,” Mackenzie started. “AJ likes Eve, Eve likes AJ. I told Eve that she should go for it seeing as how AJ’s been single for like, 6 months now, but Eve doesn’t think it would be right.”

“Go for it Eve,” Nick said. “If I hadn’t taken that chance with a certain dancer who I might mention, Mackenzie,” he coughed. “Then I wouldn’t be in love with the most beautiful girl in the world.” Nick paused for a second. “Plus,” he added unsentimentally, “AJ talks about you 100 or more times a day.”

Eve blushed. “Thanks Nick,” she said embarrassedly.

“No problem, it’s only the truth.”

After a few more minutes of convincing Eve that she shouldn’t even think twice about dating AJ, Nick and Mackenzie were off on what was known to Nick as a stop for food. However, Mackenzie’s intentions were to pick up her chemotherapy medication at the post office next to the supermarket and still make it back in time to secretly readjust her machine.

So, what’s in the box Mac?” Nick asked as he and Mackenzie walked the mile back to the tour bus. The heat had begun to alleviate and it was pleasant walking hand-in-hand with Mackenzie.

“Not sure,” Mackenzie lied. “My mom just told me that I had to pick up a package in Missouri from her when I got here.” Mackenzie was lucky that Nick knew that she had talked to her mom yesterday. That was the time when Mackenzie had made Nick break the news to her mother about the engagement. Mackenzie’s mom was nearly ecstatic as was Mackenzie’s youngest sister Eliza and younger brother Jason. Todd and Michael, her two older brothers, would find out later when Mackenzie got the chance to talk to them. She felt horrible just talking to her family knowing that she was hiding a serious secret from them, but with the odds on her side, Mackenzie decided that she would tell her family at the same time that she told Nick. “After the tour,” she said to herself.

“I hope to God that it’s some of these cookies,” Nick smiled like a four-year-old. “You’re mom is seriously the best cook.”

“Too bad that cooking didn’t rub off on me. I can’t even cook frozen pizza,” Mackenzie laughed. When Nick remembered the story behind that, he started laughing too as the couple continued on their way back to the tour bus at the St. Louis Stadium.
