Chapter Ten

“You ready?” Mackenzie softly asked Nick as she watched him connect his mic to his Larger Than Life performance suit. “Rebecca says that we are on in three.”

“Yeah, give me a sec.” Nick replied shortly. It had been 3 hours since he had blown up at Mackenzie and he was still feeling horrible.

“I’ll see you out there. Good luck,” Mackenzie smiled a little before hopping off of the bar-stool in Nick’s dressing room and leaving for the stage entrance.

When Mackenzie had left, Nick let out a sigh. He felt around in his pocket and cupped his hand around a small, velvety box. “Here goes nothing,” he said to himself before meeting the rest of the guys at the stage platform.

Things were going pretty normal. Larger Than Life was extremely well received, and with the new choreography that Fatima was testing, fans were more impressed than ever. The only thing that seemed to be missing was Mackenzie’s usual stage presence and spunk while working alongside Nick. Finally, Back to Your Heart was next on the agenda. Nick’s pulse was quickening by the second as he got to his verse, he put his hand in his pocket and extracted the small, velvety box. Slowly, Nick turned to Mackenzie, who was busy with the slow and delicate choreography for the song, and grabbed her hand. A little startled, Mackenzie looked up at Nick with a quizzical expression on her face. Her expression turned to pure shock when she saw Nick get down on one knee in front of her. The music suddenly stopped and thousands of fans began screaming excitedly. “Mackenzie Roberts,” Nick began, he paused and swallowed hard as the other four members of the Backstreet Boys began to smile uncontrollably. “Through all the years that you and I have been dancing partners, friends, and finally, boyfriend/girlfriend, I have always known that you are the only one in the world who I want to dedicate my life to. You're my other half Mac and you have always been there for me…” Nick paused and then continued. “Always,” he repeated. “And for that, I thank you. Everyday with you is more priceless than even the finest gem. So with that Mackenzie Roberts, will you be my wife?”

Mackenzie was shocked. Her heart was beating so hard that she could feel each pulse throughout her entire being. She swallowed hard, and amidst the thousands of screaming fans, her fellow dancers, and the other four members of the Backstreet Boys, Mackenzie choked out a “yes” as Nick slipped the engagement ring on her finger. Mackenzie was in tears as Nick stood up and enveloped her in a strong hug and a passionate kiss.
