Chapter One

Nineteen-year-old Mackenzie Roberts had her eyes locked on one of the paintings hanging in Dr. Williamson’s office as the voice of the doctor continued to become more and more distant. “You can beat this,” he was saying. “It’s just going to take a lot of work.”

Mackenzie broke her gaze from the painting and reverted her eyes to meet with Dr. Williamson’s. “Will I be okay once I am on the chemo?” she asked as she absent-mindedly ran a hand through her long, silky brown hair.

“You might,” Dr. Williamson confirmed, “but not all chemotherapy patients have the same results and symptoms. Some days you will feel perfectly fine and other days you won’t even want to get out of bed. It’s all about how you approach cancer.”

“Cancer.” That word sounded so strangely foreign to Mackenzie. The worse illness that she had ever had in her life was a bad case of strep throat and that was when she was seven. Now she was going to have to deal with cancer…”What about dancing?” Mackenzie asked thinking of the 40-city Backstreet Boys tour that she was scheduled to perform in. “Will I still be able to do the tour?”

“As long as you take it easy. I don’t think that hitting all the 40-cities would be a good idea. Maybe cut it back to 20 or so.”

“20 or so!” Mackenzie thought. “How am I going to tell Fatima?”

“Your chemotherapy treatments will begin tomorrow,” Dr. Williamson’s voice broke through the haze of reality. “I’ll need to see you back in at 11:00 AM tomorrow to get your medication.”

Mackenzie left the office in a kind of daze. She pushed open the heavy wood door to the waiting room. “Ready to go?”

Underneath a backward baseball cap, Nick Carter looked up from a magazine that he had been paging though. Upon seeing Mackenzie, he quickly stood up and enveloped his girlfriend of two and half years in a strong, loving hug. “Hey Mac, how’s everything?” he asked, referring to her doctor’s appointment.

“Perfect,” Mackenzie lied smiling. She didn’t want to ruin her last week with Nick before the tour with her news. There had to be a better time to tell him anyway. “C’mon, I’m hungry,” Mackenzie said changing the subject. She took Nick’s hand and practically dragged him out of the office.
