His father was a strict disciplinarian.
His mother was very domineering.
He was openly gay in his early teen years.
His first sexual experience was at 13 with another boy.
There are two interpretations that can be made on his bragging about being gay:
1. A healthy manifestation of his pride and secureness in his own sexuality.
2. Self-absorbed and always eager to be the center of attention, able to manipulate others to get what he wanted, with little appreciation or caring when he hurt others.
At 15 he moved in to an apartment paid for by an older man in Hillcrest, into a lifestyle that he would crave from then on.
At 16 his parents bought him a used red Nissan 300ZX he thought his parents were "pathetic" by thinking they "can just buy back my love".
At 19 he has a violent fight with his mother over his sexuality. The outbursts are in tune with the emotional makeup of a spree killer.
Andrew keeps finding older men to support him and pay for his dates with younger men on the side.
In 1994 he marries a spanish woman so she can get a green card for $1,000.
A couple months later they hit it off and she becomes pregnant, he is intrigued by his bisexuality, however this would mean he would have to get a real job to support his wife, by the time the baby is born the marriage is over.
April 26, 1997 he buys a one way bus ticket to Minneapolis.

Cunanan believed Trail was sleeping with Madson.
Miglin was killed for the money and vehicle, although it is believed that he said something to make Cunanan think he was killing his father.
Reese was killed because he needed a new vehicle.
Versace was everything Cunanan longed to be but knew he never would be, a rich, successful homosexual.
On July 15, police find Reese's truck which is filled with evidence:
1. Bloody clothes that Andrew was wearing.
2. US Passport in the name of "Andrew Phillip Cunanan".
3. Newspaper clippings.
4. One of Cunanan's checks.
5. List of other celebrities he wanted to target.
July 17, 1997 Dr Silvio Alfonso, who lived 10 miles from Versace was shot dead, also killed execution style, although it was later learned that he was killed by another man who looked like Cunanan over an argument about money.
July 23, 1997 at 9 pm police find Cunanan shot through the mouth by a self-inflicted gunshot wound by the same .40 caliber handgun.
It tore away his face, which no longer served his needs.
It is speculated that when he got sick in 1997 he may have had HIV, however there has never been any proof to substantiate this claim.
