Watching Michael Moore's documentary called 'Bowling for Columbine,' I realized that he never came up with a solid answer pertaining to why there are so many more murders in America than anywhere else. After a visit to my girlfriend's library, I figured it out. People speak before they bother to think.
It's shown on the news, by celebrities, and by regular, everyday people. Why do people speak before thoughts develop? Maybe it's because they are taught this technique in schools. It is a technique that teachers give to students early on in order for leaders to shine through. Problems abound from this:
1. "Leaders" are looked at as too talkative, they usually get put down by other kids later and become jaded.
2. Kids that don't know what they're talking about give opinions about nothing in particular with relation to the topic at hand.
3. TV promotes this above all mediums. Celebrities like Jay Leno, anyone on E! "Entertainment" (I quote this because I don't think Entertainment describes what E! does, wasn't John Tesh a host on that network?) and Viggo Mortensen give their opinions on all sorts of topics that have no meaning or substance. The people who ask them for their opinions only want them in order to slander them anyway.
Anyway, as I was walking through one of the biggest libraries that I've ever been in, (if not the biggest) I walk toward a set of doors that were clearly marked fire exit. The problem was that I was on a staircase and my eyes didn't focus on the signs that said "fire exit only" until I was one whole step on my way toward the doors. A couple of guys were walking up the stairs I just came from and he says, "Must be a newbie."
What is the point of this comment? Is he suggesting that someone who has been to this library before would never make that mistake? This is a huge library, who's to say that it's easy to find where you want to go? This one little comment struck me as the stupidest thing anyone could have said to me. Why didn't he give me a pointer instead? Why wasn't he paying attention to his own business? Maybe he had the same experience at one point. Maybe he just wanted to say that he knew what I was going through. Then why didn't he say that instead?
Guy, if you're out there, I can't even remember what you looked like. You were so important to me that I forgot everything except that comment. My point is, stop this trend. It's useless and it started only 40 or 50 years ago. It can be stopped. For the sake of everyone in America's health, stop doing this on the news, in entertainment, and everywhere.
