consideran como antepasados del actual Gran Danés al antiguo "Bullenbeisser" (bulldog) así como a los "Hatz-und Saurüden" (perros de cacería de jabalíes) que se situaban entre los poderosos mastines ingleses y un perro de vigilancia ágil y rápido. El término "Dogge" fue aplicado al principio a perros grandes y fuertes que no pertenecían necesariamente a una raza en particular. Más tarde, fueron utSe ilizados nombres especiales tales como "Ulmer Dogge", "Dogo inglés", "Dogo danés", "Hatzrüde", "Saupacker" y "Gran Dogo" definiendo diferentes tipos de perros de acuerdo al color y tamaño. En el año de 1878 fue integrado en Berlín un comité compuesto por siete miembros, que eran criadores activos y jueces, bajo la presidencia del Dr. Bodinus, quien tomó la decisión de clasificar todas las variedades mencionadas arriba dentro del concepto de "Deutsche Doggen" (dogos alemanes). De esta manera, la fundación proyectó la crianza de una raza alemana independiente. En el año 1880, durante una exposición llevada a cabo en Berlín, fue establecido el primer estándar para el dogo alemán. Este ha sido controlado por el "Deutscher Doggen-Club 1888 e.
