Couples: B/A-Duh, cuz they are king!

She pulled her coat tighter around the lapels, shielding her warm skin from the night’s chilled breeze.  She waited, in the darkness as the air wisped around her picking up the out of place hairs on her head, waiting for the same person she had every Friday night at this time.

Of course, always a different place.

She missed him dearly.  Every second of everyday that they were apart was ripping her to shreds and she couldn’t do anything to stop it.  Her eyes watered, glazing over as she sniffled through her reddened nose, remembering that night in detail.

The night that changed her life forever.

~

She had been waiting for Angel atop the roof of their building.  They met there every night after work, where they would have a drink, dance and usually end up making love until the dawn.  She missed those nights.  The nights she felt so alive, like a real woman in love and treasured.

The things he would whisper in her ear as his hands played along her silken skin, undressing her, baring her to the angels above.  She treasured the way his eyes twinkled in the nightly stars above and how his hands were so impossibly big and the way they spanned her middle.

Those were the things she enjoyed before it all came crashing down.  Before their wonderful life of husband and wife shattered like glass in a window.

~

She had been atop the roof of their flat, as always, waiting for him to come home.  She smiled into the night, hearing the door open and close behind her.

She should have known something was wrong this night.  He usually came through the door attempting to sing the Sade song that play softly in the background, but tonight, there was silence.  She didn’t bother to turn as the steps on the roof grew closer, yet she smiled.

“You’re late lover, you’ll have to make this up to me and I can think of some ways how.”  She sing-songed as she turned around and paused.

“Lindsey, I didn’t know it was you.  Where’s Angel?  Is something wrong?  What’s wrong?”  She half laughed, half panicked.

“No, Buffy, your husband is currently in his office, sure to call you any second with his apologies about staying a few more minutes late.”  He said a little to sardonically for her taste.  She sobered, laughing lightly at her own panic.

“Geez, I’m sorry Linds, did he ask you to drop something off?  Let me get you something to drink.  You hungry?  She asked, attempting to walk past him and back into her home when he grabbed her arm in a death grip.

“What?  Linds?  You’re hurting me.”  She said.  His face didn’t seem to take heed to her admission to pain.  He held her still.

“For 15 years I lived in his shadow.  I was his best friend.  He had the top notch education, the parents, the popularity.”  Lindsey started.  “I even saw you before he did and he fell in love with you and you him and no one ever asked about me.  How I felt when the man I grew to love as a brother took everything I ever wanted.”

“I’m sorry Linds, but we can’t do anything about that now.  I love Angel, you know that.”  She explained, hoping this would snap him from his crazed stage.

“Yea, you love him, everyone knows that Buffy.  Doesn’t make your situation any better right now now does it?”

Angel had managed to get out of the office in record time.  He decided to screw all the paper work and handle it tomorrow.  He wanted to get home to his wife.

Nothing in the world came before her.

What he found when he got home to her was like a nightmare.  When he pried a crazed Lindsey from her screaming body, he beat him until he grew tired.  When he was finished, he went to scoop his frightened wife into his arms, but Lindsey was ready for more.  Years of scorn and jealousy had finally taken their toll on him and he attacked Angel from behind, knocking him over.  A startled Buffy panicked, knowing that there was no way she would let any harm come to her lover.  She ran at Lindsey full speed, knocking him off balance and accidentally, off the side of the ledge.  His screams as he plummeted to the ground below sounded though the town and all she did was stand there.

Angel was on his feet and holding her when the police came and before she knew it, he had given his statement, telling them that it was he who pushed Lindsey over the ledge and not her.

By the time she realized what he had done, it was too late and he was on the run.

Her life was miserable.  The only light was their weekly visits which she looked forward to like a small child on Christmas.  He would let her know the location and he would meet her, hold her for the night and by morning, he’d be gone again. It was all she had to look forward to as her life dwindled before her very eyes.

~

“I hope you’re thinking about me Mrs. O’Connor or I may just get jealous.”  She heard a voice say playfully.  She never even heard him approach. She never did.

He was the master of sneaking up on people.  She was sure that it was his mysterious ways that had kept him hidden for the past six months.

She turned to look at him and the smile on her lips immediately died.  He had a cut above his right eye that seemed too raw to be old.

“What happened baby?”  She asked, walking up to his body, instinctively tracing it with her fingers.

“Don’t worry about it, its fine.  How are you?”  He asked, his arms encircling her waist and kissing her cherry nose.

“I’m feeling however you’re feeling.”  She said seriously.  He smiled wryly at her.

“Then you feel like you need to make love to you’re wife.”  He smiled, kissing her lips.

Her eyes watered once again, this time the tears falling from their haven and running down the cool expanse of her cheeks.  He lifted his thumbs to stop them.

“I miss you so much, Angel.  I’m so miserable without you and this is my entire fault.  And if I had never…” she he began only to have him hush her.

“None of that, Beloved.  I love you, forever, remember.”  He said.

“Yea, but Angel, your life…”

“Would be empty without you.”  He reassured her, holding her tighter as she began to relax.

Soon, he grabbed her hand and pulled her in the direction of the place they would stay tonight.

~

He took her to an abandoned warehouse where he had a few necessities.  She never bothered remembering where they were because it changed from week to week.  He never stayed anywhere too long.  She hated herself more every time she thought of the way his life had been stolen from him.  He had a wonderful family, friends, and career and now he had nothing but her.

He would always have her.

They lay on a covered mattress as he held her close, looking into her weeping green eyes and falling in love with her all over again.

“I would do it a million times over, Buffy.  If it means keeping you safe, then I’d die to make sure of it.”  He pledged, answering her weakly question of ‘why?’.

“Remember when we first met?  You were a sophomore and I was a senior.  You were so cute.  You and Willow were floating around campus, never even noticing the guys drooling over you.  The day I got up the nerve to ask you out, you were wearing that short mini skirt and boots and when you saw me approach, I thought you dreaded me coming.”  He chuckled.

“No, I had been crushing on you since I fist saw you freshman year.  Every girl in school wanted a piece of ‘tall dark and handsome’ Angelus O’Connor.  I just happened to have lucked up and you came to me.”  She smiled.

She held  him, burrowing her head in his chest and just listened.

“I’m pregnant, Angel.”  She admitted, her body going taut as she waited for his reaction.  His whole body froze.  He closed his eyes, tightly, trying not to let this break him, knowing now more than ever that what he was doing was right.  He pulled back, exhaling all the air he never knew he had been holding, and took her face in his hands.

“I love you, Baby.  And that’s wonderful news.  It’s wonderful that we’re having a baby.”  He said, looking into her eyes, hoping that he wasn’t weeping in front of her.

“It won’t always be this way.  I promise you it won’t always be this way.  I’ll find a way.”  He promised.

“Surrender?”  She whispered as he undressed her, kissing her pouty lips.

“Never.”  He swore, blanketing her body with his, sating his never-ending hunger for her.

He knew now more than ever that this would need to be finished, that he owed it to do what was necessary to get his life back.  If he didn’t owe it to her, he owed it to his un born child.
