After reading about Donna from Tok in the book "Looking for Alaska" I just had to visit the place and meet her. We arrived around dinner time and got to walk through her home while we checked in. What a place! This is the garage at A WinterCabin. The bathhouse is attached to the garage; it is visible just to the right of the main building. Taken at 080933R August 2002.

The Bear Cabin at A WinterCabin. This structure is a duplex; we stayed in the room on the left (the screen door is open in this photograph). Note the theater chairs on the front porch, and the grass growing on the sod roof. Taken at 080933R August 2002.

Another picture of the bath house. That's a large tub and shower hiding behind the wolf shower curtain. Taken at 080942R August 2002.

Bath house. Check out is at 10:00 a.m. The calendar on the wall near the hot water heater is a calendar of outhouse photographs. The outhouse used by the proprietor is featured in this calendar. Taken at 080942R August 2002.

Interior of the Bear Cabin -- this photograph was taken without the flash, so it's a bit dark Note the small refrigerator, the toaster, and the coffee maker. There's an electric heater and a wood stove for warmth. Donna has guests year-around -- we imagined what it would be like to hole up in this cabin for the winter. Taken at 081009R August 2002.

Interior of the Bear Cabin. Note the box of powdered milk just behind Lorraine. Yum. Taken at 081010R August 2002.

As you can see, we didn't get much "color" out of that load of dirt. We won't be quitting our day jobs soon. Taken at 081142R August 2002.

Here we are, at the entrance to Mukluk Land. Regrettably, the park isn't open until after we need to be on the road.... Taken at 081153R August 2002.

Trailside Grill, just north of Glenallen, AK.

Stayed at the Bear Cabin at "A WinterCabin" last night. Pulled in about 2100(?), made dinner, and read until after midnight. Got up this am, showered in the bath house, panned for gold, and headed in to Tok to look around. Hit the road out of Tok ~1400. Tremendous scenery on the road from Tok to Glenallen. Took a detour at Slana to see a little of the Wrangell-St Elias National Park and Preserve.
