0816 ADT, Saturday, 27 July 2002

Watched "Six Days and Seven Nights" on videotape last night. Got to sleep about midnight.

Got up about 0630 this morning -- made breakfast and prepared to go get our rental car.

I had also "rented" a short Alaska tourism video, which we watched in the morning as we made and ate breakfast. It was a nice prep for the rest of the trip.

1814 ADT, 7/27/2002

Dining at the Chair 5 Restaurant in Girdwood; salads and pizza. [See Best of].

Got out of the BOQ ~0930, and got to the bus stop at the Fort Richardson main gate about 1000. We walked around and talked until the bus arrived at 1100. Took the bus downtown, then walked to the Budget Car Rental office [near the airport]. Picked up the car at 1300, then drove back to Fort Richardson to pick up our gear.

In hindsight, we realized that we could have gotten a bus transfer to the airport, which would have significantly shortened the amount of walking required. The hike from downtown to the airport was interesting and useful, however. It certainly gave us a view of Spenard that we wouldn't have gotten otherwise.

Went to the new Joint Military Mall [combined BX/PX] to do a little shopping, then went to REI to do a little more shopping. Got on the road south about 1715.

2243, 7/27/2002

Tried two campgrounds on the way to Portage, and one on the way further south (Black Bear?) before arriving at Granite Creek. Very nice campground, and a very nice site (#1). We were a little concerned that all the campgrounds might be full. We got here about 2100, and there were still sites available.

Rained on and off today. Rain was very heavy at times.

Lorraine saw a bald eagle from the road.

Took a nice hike after the dinner in Girdwood. Walked up the creek to the school, then walked back to the car.

Fireweed at Granite Creek. This is my favorite flower. I have vivid memories of fields of these flowers from my childhood. Taken at 272137R July 2002..
