2nd generation (A2/Mk2) Golf

Generation A2/Mk2 began officially on 07/84 but was introduced in February 1984. The mk2 dimensions increased wheelbase to 93.7in, front track 56.3in. and rear track 56in. Overall length increased 170 mm and width 55 mm. The overall weight of the car was increased as the MK2 was some 100 kilos(268 lbs) heavier than the MK1. The methodical elimination of external protrusions, in the quest for improved aerodynamic efficiency, offset the weight gain by improving the new car’s drag coefficient by nineteen percent from 0.42 to 0.34. The MK2’s top speed with the same engine was now fractionally faster at 119 mph and acceleration was somewhat slower at 8.3 seconds. The increased dimensions provided a 30% increase in luggage space. By replacing the MK1’s metal fuel-tank with a new intricately blow-moulded plastic equivalent its capacity was increased by 15L, giving the new car an exceptional range of 436 miles - Motor road test 1984 (Matey-matey, 2000). www.matey-matey.com

U.K. sales figures taken in the first full year of MK2 GTI sales compare favourably with those taken in the last full year for the MK1, at 5972 and 6161 respectively. Assessment of world-wide sales figures for the same period of 77,778 and 107,377 respectively, show a drop in sales however. Whether this drop worried Volkswagen is unclear, but 1986 was to see two important steps in the evolution of the car, the introduction of the 16v version and a series of award winning adverts…

Mk2 production in 1989 was supplemented by the addition of two even higher performance models. Both were based around Volkswagen's new supercharged G60 engine. Driven directly from the engine by a ribbed belt, the supercharger mechanically pressurised the incoming engine air, before it passed through an air cooler and into the engine. At a time when other manufacturers favoured turbocharging as a means of boosting power output, Volkswagens G-lader supercharger was a bold move, indeed. Volkswagen justified specifying a supercharger on the grounds of its superior low speed torque, and minimal throttle lag. When they introduced the G60, Volkswagen claimed that 80% of full charge pressure was available through the G-lader within 0.4 sec of opening the throttle and full pressure within a further 0.4 sec (Blunsden 1992 p88).

The G60 powered Rallye Golf a limited edition four-wheel drive motorsport special with flared arches had barely been announced when it became a 'victim of its potential success'. The sport unfortunately ruled its supercharger intake had to be restricted which killed the long-term prospects of Volkswagen's first offical motorsport Golf. (Despite the popularity of the GTI it was never raced officially - although not documented this was probably deemed at odds with the success of sister company Audi's triumphant Quattro). The Rallye nevertheless made a particularly accomplished road car, and the 5000 produced sported an advanced 4WD system, electronically controlled ABS, and a high level of standard features.

The logical mass production version of the Rallye was the GTI 8v G60, which was launched on the continent in February 1990. Introduced to sit above the 8 and 16-valve models the new flagship model was a fast and attractive range topper that remains a highly coveted car to this day. Unfortunately the G60 and Rallyes never made it to the UK or North America, but a small number were officially imported by Volkswagen, which were sold to collectors and enthusiasts, and still hold premium second-hand prices. There was also N=71 limited production 16v G60 210hp editions.

Improvements were made throughout the Golf range for 1988. Digifant II engine management replaced CIS. Quarter windows were deleted from the front doors, and the mirrors moved forward to improve visibility, modernised five slot grill, subtly revised switchgear and a new steering wheel. The MK2 GTI's most striking facelift came for 1990 with the introduction of newly integrated 'big bumpers' with integrated fog-lights (GTI), new rubbing strips, 'red stripe interior'(GTI), optional Heidelberg VI stereo w/ roof areal and revised VW seats. The GTI 8v had minor engine (flywheel), exhaust, suspension (20mm lower), transmission (close ratio) and interior modifications. The GTI 16v gained 6.5x15inch 2-piece Longbeach BBS wheels and power steering as standard specification, 10.1 inch front vented rotors w/air cooling ducts, solid rear discs, 2.5" exhaust, Hella 4 lights system, Recaro seats w/optional heat or pwr, pwr mirrors, windows, sunroof, AM/FM cassette, central locking.

After more than 12 million Mk 1 and 2 Golfs (1.1 million of which were GTI's) the altogether softer and more mature MK3 Golf was launched to the world in August 1991. Generation 3 (A3/Mk3) began officially on 07/92.
